Default What Do You Like Most About Living in Alabama?

I'd just like to hear some current Alabamians wax poetic about their home state/state of choice. What do you like the most about this state versus other parts of the country? Why do you choose to live here in the Heart of Dixie as opposed to somewhere else? Maybe we could get some people who've lived in other states to list their personal pros/cons vs another state. I'm really interested in your opinions! Thanks!

Can only comment on Huntsville:

Jobs
No Traffic
Slow paced, easy living (compared to LA)
Very nice housing not much higher than $100/sqft
Low property taxes (which is a positive and negative: cheap is good but too cheap means roads, infrastructure, schools, and aesthetics problems)
Six months of good weather, three months of colder weather, three months of acceptably hot weather. (The winters are colder than the summers are hot.)
Cheap electricity (around $0.09/kW-hr)
Green and lush outside of Huntsville
The good public education in some parts of Huntsville and Madison. (There are bad schools too, but there is a big polarity; Schools in Huntsville are either really good or really bad.)
Bridge Street
Huntsville Airport (Any place that gives free wireless internet is OK by me.)

I am originally from Mobile but now live in N. AL. after spending 35 years in other cities/countries.

I like the laid back attitude
Most ppl are nice and polite
Traffic
Housing prices plus big yards
Property taxes are good
Four seasons
Education
Scenery.

As a transplant who has lived all over the country, here's my list:

1) It's just an easy state to live in. The people are incredibly nice and polite. Let me tell you, that really counts for something.

2) It's a beautiful state. No, it's not majestic or imposing like Colorado or the West Coast. But it has a gentle and delicate beauty to it. And, during Spring, it has to be the most gorgeous place on earth.

3) Alabamians know how to have fun. There seem to be fewer neuroses here than any place I've been. There's always something to do here (Croye, are you listening?) if you simply get up off your butt and find it.

4) The government sucks up far less of your income than other places.

5) The sheer virtuosity of language among its inhabitants. Southerners are incredible story tellers, and seem to possess deep insight into people. The language of Alabamians is instinctively literary. I have been privileged to sit at tables and listen to Alabamians swap stories about friends, relatives, and events in their lives. There have been times when I have been tempted to pull out a tape recorder and transpose.

6) The cities, while big enough to have all the amenities you need, are still on a human scale. The only thing I really miss is a major league baseball team.

7) A sense of reverence seems to permeate the place. I'm not necessarily speaking in theological terms, but rather in the individual's relationship with others, with the landscape, and with society as a whole. It's very hard to put one's finger on it, but it's there nonetheless.

Openness towards newcomers
Everything is at one's fingertip - art/culture/food/shopping
Relatively affordable cost of living
Jobs are available
Fairly mellow way of life - please do not confuse this with lack of business sense

When you spend 99% of your life here without going anywhere else, it's kinda hard to come up with a reason why you like some place.

If anything, I like the low CoL here and the history.

I'm a transplant from Chicago/Cleveland/Baltimore/San Diego, and I always have found more than enough things to do. You just aren't trying all that hard.

Maybe it's because I've been confined in a small city for so long

How could I forget food. Even though it's not healthy, you can't beat good ole Southern food, and Alabama's ripe with Southern food.

Now I agree with you there.
