Who knows? Unless there's a poll or survey out there.
People are people if you are in Troy or New York.

I don't know if anyone would ever be brave enough to come out and fire you because you're gay, but if they don't like you they may try to make you miserable enough to quit. This would really vary from place to place, just depends on who your boss is and who your coworkers are. I can say it's probably best to keep your personal life to yourself, but I don't know of anyone that has ever been fired for their sexual preference.

I don't know about that, I from that area and I wouldn't fire anybody for being gay as long as they keep their lifestyle outside of work. Troy is a college town so you should be ok.

Interesting. I still think it is WRONG to fire someone for being gay. It is like black, handicapped people, you know?

The metro-gay and the flashy-gay. Demeanor/mannerism.

Do you never talk about your personal life at work? "My wife..."
Is holding hands at a company function being flashy? Talking about what you and your "partner" did last weekend?
I personally know nothing about Troy. Just that I do consider the concerns legitimate.
And to say that people are the same everywhere regarding tolerance of certain people is just incorrect.

Hey, some people make up stories about imaginary wife, kids, hobbies, whatever they think they need to enter an exclusivist "club", others lie about still being married when they're divorced, others impersonate a dead relative to cash the SSI checks, some hide they're gay etc.
If you don't feel comfortable or you feel people may be prejudiced, then just don't give them fuel (or the match).
If you, otherwise feel that you must and can change thousand-yrs ingrained misconceptions and prejudice then, be my guest, rock your boat. But be prepared to face the consequences if it turns ugly (isolation, rejection, however polite, but rejection nonetheless and other averse behaviors). Im not talking pitchforks nasty things, but still.
We, as human race, American society may have done progress in alot of respects, but we still have a long way to go. What are you doing in 2050?
It is what it is in AD 2009- I don't hate gays (or any other group for that matter), but I don't live in Troy either. So, that makes less-one accepting person there.
