I will attending University of Alabama next fall and hopefully my husband will end up working in Tuscaloosa. However, there is a chance that if not this fall, at some point in my time at UA, he'll end up transfered to his companys Birmingham office.
Where do you recommend we live if I'm going to school in Tuscaloosa and he's working in Birmingham? Is there any sort of regular transit that runs between the two cities? Logistically it makes sense to move somewhere in the middle, however the one time I visited it didn't seem like there was much between those two cities. I'm sure there is decent housing, but what about restaurants, nightlife, etc? |

Well, there's not much between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham other than housing. Nothing that I think falls under nightlife or restaurants. The Mercedes plant is in Vance, about halfway between the two. Otherwise, it's pretty wide open.
There isn't any kind of mass transit (light rail, etc.) between the two, either. It's right at about an hour by car from Birmingham to the UA campus. You COULD commute, but it'll get old in a hurry. Tuscaloosa is definitely a college town. Everything shuts down on Saturdays in the fall for home games. Most of the nightlife, etc. is geared for college age kids. Cost of living is cheaper than Birmingham, though. If you're looking for more family oriented areas, schools, etc., and you don't want to live in Tuscaloosa, you might look at parts of Hoover that are close to I-459 and Morgan Road (Birmingham). It would cut the commute time down to 45 minutes or so to UA and you'd have Hoover schools, which are pretty good. You'll still be 20-30 minutes from downtown Birmingham, though. Maybe try renting in Tusc at first and find out what feels like it fits best? |
