Frugal and cheap are not the same. This is in such bad taste, however; my DH is a cardiologist and he makes more than enough, but he can be frugal. He likes nice things, but he likes them in moderation.
When I was home this summer, we went to Gap and people were complaining about the prices. It's ridiculous.

Can you elaborate a bit - what do you mean by cheap?

That being said it's just based on cultural traits that people grew up with.
Most republicans in Florida are fisical conservatives but socially liberals compared to the rest of the South and this is due to the large amount of seniors who usually vote conservative anyways.
As many seniors leave the state they are being replaced by younger people who tend to be more liberal. The 2008 election should be a predictor of where Florida is heading politically since the state gave Obama the most votes percentage wise, even over NC or VA.
No Offense but you couldn't pay me to live in Alabama.

Once upon a time people had the same thoughts about NC and GA, and just look how many people are moving there now. If someone gets a good enough job offer and they are unemployed in their home state, they're going to move regardless of Confederate flags or grits.

You are correct.
Frigid North Dakota is getting many people inquiring about moving there due to their low unemployment and activity in the oil fields.
A few years back, many of those same people wouldn't have imagined considering North Dakota.

Going back to the original poster. The Northeast is NOT a wasteland. Northerners are NOT ruining the south and the "southern culture" is not in any danger because Alabama will never be the next Florida or anything close to it. If anything, the transplants (who aren't always going to be from the north by the way) help our southern economies with more jobs and more people to pump extra moolah into our cities/towns. ...New development isn't always going to be done in poor taste and make the south a wasteland either.
Quaker, I agree with you to a point, but geez, do you have to make it sound so insulting?!
Also, FYI MiamiRob, I never understood the whole confederate flag thing either. (Lived in the south my whole life) Always thought it was stupid and think the whole subject should just be put to bed...and should have when the Civil War ended in 1865. I also don't understand how NASCAR can be so entertaining. I could go on but you got my point. ..I guess I'm one of the few that don't live up to the southerner stereotype. Oh, I'm also a democrat and am hoping GA turns blue on the next election!

Excuse me? Rubbish. I was raised in FL, my sister was born there, and my brother lives there still. We have no difficulty at ALL understanding the "whole Confederate flag issue" , we all LOVE grits, and although I don't attend church much anymore, religion is a fairly simply concept to grasp. (If you ever come close to death, you might get a better understanding. ) Nascar and hunting you can have - but college football has nothing to do being from the south. Give me a break!

No kidding. The beaches of Florida are the main draw for most. Alabama? No way.

You may call us "rednecks." We'll proudly own up to that moniker.

And don't forget TN fokes like me. Nary one of 'em seen sh*t til they spend alil' time around redneckhillbillies. Fokes usedtocould tell exactly who went up the holler by the sound of the truck .... but in our neck of the woods, we still can. To small and tight feel transplants say about our small towns and they don't like our non diverse little universes and look elsewhere, but hey .. we don't cry though cause we really enjoy being ''who were are'' and don't have to tiptoe around others
