You know, you're not TRULY a Mobilian unless you were conceived at the stroke of midnight of Mardi Gras day under a Camelia bush on Government St.

I can't say that I have ever noticed that.

What is this "Southern Culture" some people are afraid of losing. Is it the so called Southern Hospitality or the ignorance and bias that is sometimes associated with "Southern Culture". I look forward to seeing more people from different states, backgrounds, and cultures moving to Alabama. I for one love diversity, the ability to converse and thing new things from people you normally wouldn't. It will make our state a better place to live. One final thought, Southern Hospitality is mostly BS, its all about being pretending with people you know and also total strangers.

Well, we really enjoyed the Southern Hospitality BS when we moved to Birmingham and our only social contact was our cat. From where to go shopping to flat-tire-fist-aid to home-cooked dinners when contractors moved us out of our home.

On a more serious note, I haven't noticed that in Mobile either. ...I DID notice how terrible the drivers were the last time I was down there.

Why do we need to give up our southern culture ?!!! Our culture isn`t all about racism and bilble thumping and that`s not even considerd culture those are events. Reading the comments on this thread are rediculous. I see nothing wrong with southern culture all of that other stuff has nothing to do with are doesn`t play any part of it.

I agree if you give up any kind of culture your city has then the city would not mean nothing. Do people tell New Yorkers to stop being like New York. Mobile is no different and it has nothing to do with racism many people are just jealous of Mobile. Alabama is lucky that we have it and people need to get a clue.

It has changed but not to the point of no return. I have lived in Chicago, New Jersey, Virginia, and California. I have friends in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Lousiana. Florida is a tax haven for Northerners as the Prof said above. Alabamians are cheap because they have been forced to be that way. The pay is not tremendous here, but neither is the cost of living. The income taxes are outrageous because we only have Bible belts which relate to no taxes. Don't get me wrong I do not mind the churches etc, but we do have them every 2 or 3 miles in this state and sometimes 4 or 5 right across the street from each other. I was born here left here and came back. I will always be here and do not care what anyone calls anyone else in this state. I live here because I want to. I have Florida below, Louisiana is a 5 hour drive, Savanah the same. Casinos in Mississippi are 2 hours away. Why would I want all this in Alabama when I can drive 1 to 5 hours for everything? Great water activities in Alabama and everyone flocks to the Coosa River, Logan Martin and Lay Lake. These places are great outdoor fun and keep us here.

Alabama won't become like Florida. It is far too conservative and I pray that it will stay that way.
Sure, you might run into a transplant or two, but Alabama will always be the Heart Of Dixie.
Believe me, most folks that are going someplace south for retirement won't even consider Alabama. At least from my experience.
