Not essential, but recommended, especially if you might be attacked by your neighbor's wild dogs. Seriously, living in the country you are by definition isolated, and the sherrif's office can't be everywhere all the time--you'll be your family's first line of defense should any problems arise.

Thank you much as usual, Southlander and Nalabama. Both of you have answered just as I was thinking. Now I need to know where to start, do I start with gun training first or purchase a gun first and learn by the enclosed instruction? I know quite a bit about gun laws. I am moving into my 40 acre property 28th of this month and I better get ready for any eventualities. I have started looking on the net for more infos, but you guys might even be more useful instructors on how to do it. Mind you, I haven't touched a gun in my life and I wouldn't even know which one to buy, but I have very well developed commonsense and wisdom in figuring out life matters. Again thank you and I am looking forward for answers, still.

I would visit places that sell guns, look, and talk to the store owners. They'll be glad to give you advice and direction on being trained to use the gun, plus what kind of gun etc. I think you'll probably wind up buying one and then getting training specific to it.

Wonderful Southlander. Thank you. I will do just that but just wondering which one do you personally recommend that is just good enough and easy to maintain for self defense, not hunting? Just if I may ask.

I don't have a gun, so I can't recommend anything. Just have a brother-in-law who has a bunch. I imagine they'll ask you what you intend to use it for, kinda like shopping for a computer! Then recommend based on that. Find you a store in Lawrence County and hang out with 'em a bit...I'll bet they're a tight group, once they get to know you.

Dear all my bulletin friends!

I like to report that I am very pleasantly surprised by what I got in Moulton. We saw the property online and put an offer through a realtor. We never inspected the home, as usual I trust everybody, including realtors. I am happy I did trust people. I got the best place I was looking for about 42 acres with a nice home on it. As Southernraised said, Moulton is excellent for land. Yes it is, now don't tell all those Los Angeles people. I paid what we would have paid for a one bedroom condo over there. As nalabama said, out there in the country you are all alone. True I am here in a very quiet place enjoying maximum freedom, including not having to wear any clothes. Its all I ever wanted - freedom from all the cities big or small. I am extremely busy enjoying life as I should have done along time ago.

Thumbs up Al'right!

I can just imagine you sitting in your lawn chair outside your farmhouse--in the nude--at 4:00 a.m typing on your laptop to post to our little forum over your wireless connection. Hope you've got that firearm handy just in case. Ain't life grand!

I have lived in Alabama all of my 57 years and I have never heard so much talk of the KKK in this day and time. Why is it brought up in almost every post????? People in Alabama are tired of the problems that were brought on by the KKK long ago. We are all Gods people. I happen to be white. To me the KKK was never anything to be proud of!!!!!

I am glad it has worked out for you....now regarding your gun....(my software company works with LE agencies therefore I know a lot of cops...).

First, if you want to carry a gun in your car under Alabama law, you must first obtain a Pistol Permit from the County Sheriff. They will do a criminal background check on you before issuing it to you...the cost is very minimal.

Once you have obtained your pistol permit, go to a local gun store and tell them about your needs. A small revolver such as a Smith and Wesson Airlight is an excellent gun to carry on your person or to keep in a glovebox of a car.

Also, an inexpensive shotgun would be a good choice to keep in the house. I would recommend a Beretta 392. You might even learn to bird hunt!!! Once you get used to being on land, you might be pleasantly surprised to learn of the joys of bird hunting....dove, duck and quail.

Once you have bought your gun(s), drop by the Sheriff's Office and inquire about getting some lessons from the deputies at their range. Every Sheriff's office is going to have a shooting range, bc every LE officer must 'requalify' annually with their firearm. This might be a nice way to meet some of the deputies. There's nothing better than having a good relationship with the Sheriff's office. Ask about the deputy that patrols your area and maybe you can meet him/her.

I would suggest having a gun if for no other reason because of an encounter with an animal....you could have a bobcat, water moccasin, rattlesnake or other similar critter that you need to deal with. I've shot water moccasins with my shotgun in my yard in suburban Birmingham....

As for the KKK, I would be stunned to hear of any activity...they are long gone out of Alabama.

The most common type of crime in the rural south is the manufacture and usage of methamphetamine. This is a crime among rural white people. Meth labs are located out in the woods because they make a terrible smell. Operators of meth labs will be armed and dangerous...therefore if you are walking or driving in an unknown area well off your property and smell a bad odor (not like manure at all), TURN AROUND and leave immediately! Then, call the Sheriff's office if you haven't been seen. They know how to deal with these labs and will destroy them and arrest the operators.

Face it, you've got 40 acres so just stay on your place and you'll be just fine.....
