I really think Dothan is a great place to retire. But if you have children you might want to reconsider a move to Dothan. The public schools are mediocre at best. The citizens here will not invest in their children's future. They fight any tax increase tooth and nail. Their attitude is "If it was good enough for me, it's good enough for my kids". Sure, if your idea of higher education is Alabama, Auburn, or Troy University, you might be satisfied with Dothan public schools. But I would not count on a Dothan based education for placement in schools outside of the SEC. From personal experience I can remember moving my son who was in advance placement classes here in Dothan, to a school system in Upstate NY. He had to work his butt off just to catch up with his class in Upstate NY. Again, Dothan is a great town in just about all aspects. Just not education.

We do not live in Dothan but close by on the lake. We go into Dothan for a lot of things and have found that the people are friendly and many are natives but quite a few have lived elsewhere because of being in the millitary. Funny thing, in Eufaula (nearby}we have met quite a few CALIFORNIANS!!!! Fo figure!
