Hello,
IS Alabama cities have a good state to research as a retirement location?
I understand the cost of living is very low compared to other states and the weather is pretty mild.

Any negatives?

And positives?

I'd be asking these questions:

How will my pension(s), retirement be taxed?
Where are medical facilities?
How far are my relatives, grandkids, etc?
If I don't like it, do I have a "Plan B" and how would I get there?
Mild weather compared to where? California? No, Illinois? Yes.
What do I like to do, really do? How will I really spend my time?
Will my spouse like it too?
Would I be willing to pay lower taxes in return for lower amenities?

Negatives? Colder than California. Mosquitoes in the evening hours in summer. Some towns lack diversity in shopping and restaurants.

Check this out: Retirement in Alabama..Alabama Advantage.--retirement, retiree attraction, relocation, Alabama, Alabama retirement, Alabama Advantage, State of Alabama, regional retirement, best places, retirement advantages, robert trent jones, Alabama regions, reg

Many cities also have retirement information on their city Web site, or visitors bureau Web site. You might want to search for that, if you have a particular place in mind. Good luck!

Funny, I always thought Alabama had weather comparable to Calif. Chicago just had a 4th death this year related to the cold! I don't believe Ill. is a retirement destination.
And, the lower amenities vs. taxes is always a great consideration.

Well, California is so diverse, I'm sure somewhere in CA has AL type weather (maybe not the humid summers).

I am finding Northern Alabama a lot colder than I expected. As I type this, it is 21F, that's cold. It's been pretty cold for several days. The summers here aren't as hot as I expected - humid, but it doesn't feel any more uncomfortable than the west San Fernando Valley where I grew up.

Compare Huntsville to Los Angeles average high temperatures:

I think that this winter is colder than we have had in several years. Atlanta is colder too this year. Next year we could be milder, who knows? We are having real cold weather for us and it seems to be lasting forever but in reality in a week we could have 60s. Nothing stays around for real long periods of time. And it is definitely wetter than we have seen for a long time.

The mosquitoes here are not as bad as the ones we had in Wisconsin. Don't know why but perhaps because they spray around here.

I live a mile from the Florida state line and it was 22F this morning when I got up. The digital thermometer in my car didn't even have a temp this morning, it just said "ice". LOL
