Homeschoolers in Auburn, Opelika area?
If there are any homeschoolers in the Auburn & Opelika areas or within 20 miles of these places, please respond. Would like to get some current, pertinent information since we may be moving to Auburn. Thanks in advance.

Auburn has one of the top school systems in the state. I think Opelika is up there, too. Nonetheless, you may not get a reply here because there are not that many Alabama folk here. There is probably a homeschool association either there or out of nearby Montgomery. I would suggest contacting one of the bigger Baptist churches in those areas and ask...they should be able to connect you. Good luck.

If you are moving to Auburn, i would highly recommend attending the Auburn school system. In '06, Auburn high ranked, according to Newsweek, in the top 50 high schools in the nation. This is out of thousands and thousands of schools.
As for Opelika, they are neve ranked high, but they have a good school system, nonetheless.
Good Luck.

Near Auburn
Hi! We live in a rural community near Auburn/Opelika and travel there on a regular basis. I know of two large homeschool groups in this area - one Christian and the other Secular. I have met people in both, so either would be beneficial depending on your religious preferences. Personally, we travel to Columbus (about 1/2 hour from Opelika) for homeschool co-ops and meetings. LaGrange also has a lot of great homeschooling families. The laws are very different in Alabama than Georgia, so if you are just getting started in Alabama, you may want to find a group closer to home. Montgomery has a wealth of homeschooling resources as well and it isn't a bad drive from this area.
I homeschool my six year old daughter and plan to do the same with my two year old. Our public school options are atrocious, so that is our reason for homeschooling. However, I am beginning to see merit in it for any family and I would encourage you to do whatever is best for your family.
Please feel free to email me if you would like. I actually just signed up for this board so that I could post a response to your request. If I can help - I would be happy to do so. -Amy

I don't fit the bill, but...
I am moving to Birmingham soon, and we homeschool our children. I was able to find information on homeschooling in Alabama by checking the websites of the Home School Legal Defense Association ( www.hslda.org), and Clonlara Home Based Education ( Discover the Joy of Learning! | Clonlara School | Alternative campus school in Ann Arbor, Michigan and home based education program worldwide). You may also want to call and talk to someone at either organization for more information on homeschooling in AL.
On the other hand, you may be looking just to find other homeschoolers and find out what may be available for us, in the way of support groups/ activities. In that area I am of no use to you, since I'm in the same boat!
Good luck and God bless you!
P.S. We would homeschool even in the best school district in the nation; although the quality of education is one reason we're homeschooling, it's by far not the only one.

Hi, I just read this and I know this post is a couple months old, but I am interested in homeschooling my kids. I would really like to know what my options are.And since I am new to this concept of HS, I would feel more comfortable with the co-op idea. Please help if you can. Thanks, Haben

where are you?
Haben - pretty cool: city-data emailed me to let me know you had posted a reply to my old post!
How old are your children? Where do you live?
There are many, many options for homeschoolers these days. Explore the two websites I mentioned in my earlier post, to HSLDA and Clonlara. They are both good places to start. Also you could try looking for good books on homeschooling to get you started; Rainbow Resources has a website: Rainbow Resource Center, Inc., with thousands of resources/ supplies/ books, etc. Check out their books on homeschooling; I can recommend Mary Pride's books for sure. You could also do a google search with the words homeschool and the name of your town, and you might get some local groups. Or call some of the churches in your area and see if they know of any.
If you're in Alabama there are minimal legal requirements with which you must comply. (I'm from Michigan, which has no requirements for homeschoolers, and I find these requirements tedious but they are necessary here in AL.)
By the way, I'm just curious: what are your reasons for homeschooling?
Gotta run; dinner might be burning!
 Clare.
