Default Looking for info on Rural Towns/Areas Outside Montgomery

Hello everyone! I've been reading the various posts about places in Alabama that would be great for rural living. My husband as a job interview next week at the Hyundai/Kia Plant in Montgomery. We would be relocating from South Carolina if he gets the job (which looks like a great possibility). We are quiet folks that don't care too much for the hustle and bustle of the big city. We are looking for an area outside of Montgomery that is more rural. Our dream has been to find an old farmhouse to fix up and call our own.

My questions are as follows: Where are some good, rural towns that we can look into? He'd be willing to commute to work anywhere within a 30 mile radius. At first we will be looking to rent property with a possible rent-to-own option. Upon selling our house here in South Carolina, we'd have to save up additional funds for a down payment for buying a home. We think this might happen in about a year or so. The square footage is not that big of an issue. We'd like to be able to find a place that had a little bit of land, maybe something along the lines of 1 to 5 acres. We have 4 cats and a dog and they are outside/inside pets; so we would like to be off the beaten path. Our children are grown and out of the house so we do not have to worry about schooling, etc. I guess our price range for renting would be anywhere from $500-$800, and purchasing range anywhere from $100,000 to $150,000. We are somewhat avid outdoorsy types and love hiking, camping, boating, etc. I am an avid gardener so the land aspects of a property would really appeal to me. Neither of us have been to Alabama, and all of my research has been through the internet thus far. When my husband flies to Al. for his interview, he will have a few hours to check out some surrounding areas outside of Montgomery. I know, not alot of time. We'll be living in a corporate apartment when/if we relocate to Montgomery. Any tips and information would be so graciously appreciated. If anyone would like me to elaborate more on our requests of areas, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Palestar

Very small, but I sure liked what we saw passing through there in March--Pike Road, a community southeast of Montgomery off US Hwy 231/82 and maybe 10-15 miles due east of the Hyundai facility.

I highly recommend not living in Montgomery. If I was working in montgomery, I would live in Tallassee, Al. Small town, not too far from Montgomery, maybe like 25 miles. You should be able to find affordable real estate in Tallassee, al.
Good Luck and congrats on the new job.

Default Greenville, Al

Look into Greenville! It's voted the best small town in America. We live north of G'ville and my husband has been driving to Montgomery, about 35 min. for 32 years until he retired. Greenvile is becoming a bedroom community for the Hyundi workers. We are getting a new movie theater, BBQ and Mexican resturants and a new Holiday Inn. Also Robert Trent Jones golf course and Sherling Lake is near by. Come check us out!

i second the mention of greenville.

there's not a whole lot of nice places to live that are really close to the hyundai plant to be honest.

tallassee seems a bit far away from the plant to be a worthwhile move, especially since you will also be forced to contend with montgomery traffic.

if you do want to move east of montgomery, i think you could find cheap property in mount meigs or waugh before going all the way out to tallasee. mt meigs is becoming a little more suburban than rural, but it's still got a small town feel to it.
