Moving to Pell City
It's very funny that you mentioned Pell City. That was the very first city that we looked at when we decided to move to Alabama. The reason that we changed our minds was because that we thought that the crime rate had gone up along with housing due to the population increase. Is this not true? Coming from a bigger city, with increasing crime, we really want a nice quiet small town. With good schools of course. Do you know anything about Fort Payne or any of the surrounding areas? We did like Pell City, but it looked like it was being built up pretty quick.
Thank you

Fort Payne is pretty isloated still. Even though I-59 runs right through it, it is an hour from Chattanooga, an hour from Gadsden, 2 hours from Birmingham and about 2 hours from Huntsville. Fort Payne is great if you want a typical small southern town. There is absolutely nothing wrong with FP, in fact it is a very nice little town, it just isn't very near, anywhere.
Some people like that though. I do.
It's in a beautiful area, near Little River Canyon, and it's probably one of those most beautiful areas in the entire state.

I heard that there were a lot of hispanics there, do you know anything about how the area there is racially? Somebody also mentioned that the hispanics were leaving because the factories were closing, if the factories are closing, how is the area doing? We live in an area that is going down rather quickly due to factories closing. Both with crime and nothing being able to stay open due to lack of excess money to spend. We don't want to have to go through it all over again. We love the idea of a small "mayberry" town where everybody knows everybody. Do you know how the opportunity is for work in FP? That is a big concern also, ya know, being able to pay the bills and all. It looks like a beautiful place to live, and I really would love to live by the mountains.

May I suggest that you look into Guntersville? Schools are consistently in the top 5 in the state, reasonable cost of living, beautiful lake and mountains, friendly people, good healthcare facilities, etc. We've been here 12 years and it's a great life.

We live just out side Dothan and are about 7 miles to the FL/AL line - weather ranges about 10* different than where we were from in SWFL, but otherwise nice - Dothan is nice and growing - 80 mile to Panama city - Houseing - what is your price range?

Ive lived in Alabama for a while and I have to say you do not give Pell City credit. Crime rate statistics can be misleading. Pell City and Alexander City are two very nice cities both on lakes. Yes the population of Pell City is growing but it is being handled well and the new buildings are very nice. Thier is a really big and nice lake and civic center where there is an annual on the lake fourth of july firecracker thing. Most other towns look like typical run-down Alabama-Mississppi towns with old squares with abodaned shops and broke-down trucks in the country. Florence is also a nice town. Birmingham has just reached the top ten in highest crime rates i believe. And you metioned hispanics? If you dislike people of hispanic orgin you might should be heading for New Brunswick or Newfoundland Canada instead.Recent US census information points towards a not to distant future where hispanics are the majority (2050 maybe)
The hands-down nicest looking city in my opinion in Alabama? Eufaula near the Georgia border, and its small like Mayberry, also on a lake. Rows of willow trees along the main street, alot of antebellum homes, sort of like a small savannah

Thank you, I think that we might rethink the Pell City area. Have talked to another couple here in Michigan that is also checking out the Pell City area. Do you have an thoughts on areas in Pell City to stay away from? I know there are bad areas in every city--that's life!
