Check out the Shoals Area
I live in Muscle Shoals and I love it. Housing is more affordable than other parts of Alabama like Birmingham. Its a great place for kids. We will be moving to B'ham or Tusc. area in about a year only for me to go to school but I plan on coming back.
I would recommend Muscle Shoals, East or North Florence, Killen, Greenhill, and Tuscumbia areas.
If hubby is going to open up shop, I would recommend opening up in Florence. Its kinda got more "business" there.
I have been self employed and my business was much better in Florence than in Muscle Shoals. Just a thought though. Good Luck.

Athens, AL is a very good place to live and is growing by leaps and bounds. It has a wonderful school system. I moved here in 2001 and am very pleased with the city and as I said the teachers in the city school system are awesome.

Hi,
I live in Jasper, Walker County on Smith Lake. I can tell you that it is a wonderful place, growing community with enormous opportunities. Land, houses, insurance and taxes are great.
The city of Jasper is wet but the county is dry. Wonderful churches and communities that have helped Hurricane Katrina victims with homes, jobs and going to Ms and La to help.
School systems are very good with Sumiton Christian being a good private school also.
I work as a real estate agent and mortgage broker Moderator cut: removed
The Shelby County-Chelsea area is very populated high house prices, taxes and large traffic problems. Thanks

Look into Bessemer.........there are some good Private Schools but the city schools are aweful! It is a growing area with lots of Early Eclectic and Victorian style home built between 1880 and 1913.

Please look at the Muscle Shoals area. There ae excellent communities on both sides of the river, new industry coming in.. one announcement just told of a railroad car company coming to the area which will have over 2000 permanent jobs when completed.. plus all the subsidary companies that it will bring. We have a wonderful recreational area.. especially the area lakes and the Tennessee River. Sports programs and facilities for all ages, nice parks and recreational areas, good libraries and reasonable property taxes. Housing is available in all price ranges. Rent is much cheaper in this area than say B'Ham or Huntsville for equivalent housing. Purchase prices are about the same all over northern Alabama. Utilities are cheaper here, because of TVA, but they are slowly increasing. Overall it is a great place to live. Please visit www.exploretheshoals.com. There is good information there. Have a great day!
