Default moving. Alabama?

I've been seriously thinking about moving south. I'm from Iowa, and I've heard amazing things. I'm so tired of the cold, nasty, climate and unfriendly people here...and the crime rate where I now live is unreal. Can anyone tell me what the cost of living and housing is like in Alabama? I would like to live in a somewhat rural area close to the water, but maybe 15-45 min. from a good sized city for work/shopping, etc., any suggestions? I'm lost. just wanting a quiet, peaceful, friendly place to live after nursing school. Thanks!

This is a great tool with a searchable map and tons of drop down boxes from homes in Northern Alabama including Huntsville:

ValleyMLS.com

Electricity is practically free at around $0.07/kwhr.

I'm looking more towards southern Alabama...around the gulf. I'm also looking into Mississippi.

Crime and rude people in Iowa? Are you serious?

You could look around the Robertsdale-Summerdale area. If you couldn't find work at the smaller hospitals in Foley or Fairhope you could always commute to one of the bigger hospitals in Pensacola.

I live on Smith lake in northern Alabama, it's awesome. The whole state is awesome. Try the gulf shores area, i love it there too. Moved to Alabama from Florida in 05 before the RE crash, the people and everything about this state is nice. Born a northerner, if i had to fight and die for this country it would be next to a southerner, i love this state!

Look into the Robertsdale, Loxely, or Silverhill areas. Cost of living is pretty low, and you would be near the Gulf, but still close to the Eastern Shore and Mobile.

Alabama is such a beautiful state....it's actually amazing when your driving through how as soon as your cross the state line how everything changes from dying trees and trash on the side of the road to freshly cut grass and the landscape is just great. I've also lived in boloxi and since the storm it hasn't really been the same but it looks great now. D'Iberville and Gulfport are some good areas with decent prices.

Baldwin county is a great area. BTW, Fairhope was established as a single tax colony by people from Iowa back in the 1800's.(my next door neighbor is from Iowa) Fairhope has rural areas just a couple of miles from town, and has a lovely pier/park. Property taxes in Alabama are lowest in the nation, real estate is very affordable(specially now) and it's close to Mobile and airport is less than an hr drive. Pensacola is 1 hr drive also, with a super airport. Eastern Shore shopping malls have many options for work/shop, and it's 20 minutes away. And crime is very low.
Daphne is closer to I-10, and can also be a great option. Both towns have nice areas of rural settings if you go out a bit, and prices drop the farther east you go. (away from the bay) Good luck!

We love you too...lol. Seriously, Baldwin County is the best place to live. Bon Secour is a pretty place near the Gulf and a river. I love Fairhope too, but it is more expensive to live in Fairhope. Silverhill is nice but farther from the water than the other two. Welcome to Bama.
