Default Leaving California For The Heart Of Dixie

Me, my wife, and our seven sons will be leaving Sacramento, Ca. on or around the 6th of August for Munford, Al. I spent a week there this past week and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a home large enough for the 9 of us with some land too!! I will be driving a 16' moving truck with a car carrier in tow with 2 kids. My wife will have the other five children and supplies for the trip in our station wagon. I wonder if anyone can suggest a route that we can travel so that we can avoid any mountains as, traditionally, moving trucks don't do well over mountains. Thank you in advance.

to be honest, it's going to be tough to avoid mountains when travelling from norcal to alabama. the only real way would be to head all the way south towards Los Angeles/Las Vegas and then start your east-west trek across arizona, new mexico, texas, etc.

i suppose of time isn't an issue that would work, but realize that probably will add a day to your move. and also you will want to stay in southern or central AZ/NM because the northern parts of those states are very much in the rocky mountains.

and even this is not a completely mountain-proof route, as i believe in extreme west texas out by el paso, there are some pretty fair sized hills (4000-5000 feet).

If that link doesn't work for you, go to www.mapquest.com and enter Munford, AL. Once it brings up the map, go to the bottom of the page and under "Directions From" enter Sacramento, CA. It'll come up with step by step driving directions along with an overall map.

I've driven the Birmingham - Sacramento route probably 10 times over the last 20 years. You're going to have some hills to deal with no matter what when you go through Nevada or Arizona, but they're not that bad.
