Wow. This really disgusts me. FIX THE ROAD, ALABAMA! It's been a problem for years. 55mph is ridiculously slow for an interstate in a rural area! I could understand if it were in a metropolitan area where there is more traffic, but this is practically right between Birmingham and Atlanta.

You have to have money to fix the road...
you can't complain about the state squeezing money out of its citizens and then the state of the roads in the same breath.

Wish I had seen this thread before my last trip from Memphis-Marietta. I visit friends there often and used to always go via Nashville. With 78 finished from the MS line almost to I-65, and with just that short stretch off the Interstate, I had started making Memphis-Birmingham-Marietta my usual route, and that stretch with the 55MPH limit was excrutiating! Looks like I'll be going back to the old I-40, I-24, I-75 route.

That's too bad. I enjoyed the Alabama route. Virtually no traffic from Memphis to Birmingham - although a rest stop along that section would be nice! One of the exits just east of B'ham was the perfect distance from home to eat lunch & fill the tank - and there was a good variety of restaurants right off I-20 there.

I don't mind driving 55MPH. In fact, since we often take the Miata, it's fun to hit the side roads with the top down. Top down on the interstate at 70+ with 18-wheelers 3 feet from your ear isn't fun...so it's usually top up for that kind of driving. 55MPH on the Interstate though is simply boring...

If we set our cruise control to 64 do we get a ticket? What is the tolerance on both sides of I-20?
TIA

Rephrase it - speed limit 55 mph.

Don't some states have a +10 rule for speeding? As in, being clocked at 44 in a 35 is not ticketable as it is less than 10 mph the posted limit. I'm not sure if there's any truth to this but I did see something similar in a Georgia highway patrol law book a few years ago.

Well, that's basically my question. Do we drive 64, 63 or what. What is the level of tolerance here. On the Gororgia side can you drive say 79 with impunity?

I make the drive from Birmingham to Atlanta twice a week (going on 10 years!)... Would not move back to Atlanta if I where elected Ga's Governor! In the 10 years traveling this road, I might see 1 or 3 state troopers a month... Now that the speed limit has been moved to 55, I see an average of 6 each trip! Tell me this isn't about revenue... that portion of I-20 is much better than a whole lot of interstates that still post 70.
Maybe I am upset... I got pulled over the 2nd day they changed the speed limit (driving 74)... it was certainly my fault... because I did not notice the change... a few days later they had lighted signs flashing about the 55 speed limit...
I would love to know what additional revenue the state has generated with this change.
