My fiance and I are going to be getting married in fall of 2011 and will finish college in a year after that. My fiance is in the Software Engineering career field. We also want somewhere with land, and would like to start out somewhere that is at least reasonably well suited for us, but realize that we will find places after living there that might be better suited for us.
Please can anyone tell me a place where I can find: 1-10 acres of land, possible for a small garden, Catholic churches and just a decent atmosphere to raise a future family.
Thank you so much!
We can't wait to visit Alaska!

There are lots of places that have everything you want except perhaps the software engineering job. That may need a small city. I don't know much about that.

When you say small city, do you mean like Fairbanks or Juneau? Our other criteria are much more important, my fiance doesn't mind a small commute to work. We were originally looking at Wasilla, but I kept doing searches on the internet and kept hearing about drug problems and all that. From what I understand all of Alaska is high in crime, but that's another reason we want a little bit of remoteness. I am beyond interested in moving there and we know that some sacrifices need to be made, but Alaska seems to have an amazing lifestyle that suits us.
Thank you for your quick response

There are drug users all over Alaska. In relation to land, it can be expensive, unless it's quite remote. For example, some 1/2-acre lots by the Chena River in Fairbanks could fetch around $62K.

Not everything is quite what it seems to be. You need to visit first before you move up. I thought New York City seemed amazing until I went. Once was enough.

Yeah, we plan on making like a week or two vacation trip up there to go through and visit a couple of different places, than my fiance will have to visit before he gets the job. So where is a good places? Fairbanks or Juneau?

You can't even compare these two to each other. One is a costal town in a temperate rainforest and the other is in the interior of the state where it flat gets cold in the winter. It all depends on what YOU are looking for.

In terms of climate within the continental U.S., that's like comparing Seattle, WA to Fargo, ND (the best I could think of down here).
Which type do you seek?

Sounds like the Kenai Peninsula is right up your alley. But I don't think there would be much in the software dept for work.

Well it also depends on where we can find a job for my fiance. I think it's just important that we are able to garden, have some land and the like. The other question I do have, I've read that you can garden vegetables and it's short and you get BIG vegetables, does that mean you can grow anything?
