Barrow
Hi ya'll,
We'll be in Alaska in August - our first trip- and we can hardly wait ! I can see it's going to be too short a visit. Doing lots of research.
The Barrow kids were in Jacksonville recently and my husbands company may do some design work for the school there. We'd like to fly up for a day from either Anchorage or Fairbanks, My question- is Alaska Air the only option? They are quoting $ 544 RT from Anchorage, that's for one. Anyone got any ideas ? Thanks

Sorry--it's got a monopoly here as far as I know.

Yep. Sadly domestic flights in Alaska are almost as expensive as flights to the lower 48. It is sad, really. Gotta love monopolies.

The Brooks range is still pretty inhospitable in summer, and you can't make 3 miles an hour on the north plain tundra. Walking is pretty much out of the question. LOL

GO get thee an Alaskan Airlines frequent flyer credit card! They will send you a "free" $50 companion fare coupon once the account is set up and another every yr on your anniversary-date. I think our coupon arrived about 2 weeks after we signed up. Of course, you also earn FF miles and can eventually get a free flight that way. Just make sure you pay it in full every month, rewards credit cards are notoriously high interest.

Visiting Barrow
Hello all
Planning on visiting Barrow for 2 days at the end of May. Was curious as to the best place to stay, have read mixed reviews about all! Any suggestions on what to do or NOT to do while visiting?
Thank you-

There are three hotels in Barrow (excluding the NARL Hotel, which is not a full service hotel for tourists), and all of them are nice enough.
One thing to make sure you do is have one meal at Pepe's North of the Border Mexican Restaurant, and talk to Joe The Waterman about a tour of his museum. He doesn't advertise, so finding out about it isn't necessarily easy, but he has an absolutely fabulous collection of artifacts and other items local to Barrow. He gives a tour every night at about 10:30PM after they close the restaurant.
