NEW YORK, July 26 (Reuters) - North Dakota and Alaska have added the most jobs, while Nevada, California and Florida have lost the most, in the last five years, according to research released on Monday.

N Dakota, Alaska lead US job creation, study says | Reuters

When Kate + 8 arrived in Alaska with her flock, she effectively doubled the state's population. This news could double it again.

Yeah, the Reuters piece was poorly worded. States were ranked according to an "employment score"; neither according to total jobs added, nor to percentage increase in jobs added. And these are private sector jobs, not including public sector.

For the record, you can see the summary here:
http://www.portfolio.com/business-ne...ent-report.pdf

North Dakota was #1 with an employment score of 20.36; 7.8% increase in jobs for the period 2005-2010; adding 21,300 private sector jobs
Alaska, #2, 12.33, 4.4%, 10,100
Texas, #3, 11.52, 5.9%, 474,400

So, Texas is a better choice for job seekers given the larger number of jobs, and greater percent growth, than Alaska. A high percentage of Alaskan jobs are public sector.

Yeah, I have heard that one before. I was simply noting that the OP passed on the erroneous Reuters' claim that Alaska added more jobs than every state other than North Dakota. Digging into the real numbers, however, shows that Texas added ~474,000 jobs versus ~10,000 for Alaska. They failed to note that the ranking was due to some nebulous "employment score".

474,000 is a lot larger than 10,000 from where I come from....

Yep, with our smaller population base, creating a dozen new jobs would put us up on the percentage poll pretty high, reality is that it is a rough place for a newbe to get work unless they have a special skill that is in supply.

And being a Crab Fisherman isn't one of them....
