I am planning to spend some time in Phoenix and San Diego next year. Trying to decide a "best time" to travel from Anchorage to Haines to the Ferry. Are there any major diffs between say leaving November and leaving February? Any one have any thoughts on which month is best? worst?

thanks in advance.

I think this is answered by another question. Are we going to have an early winter or late winter? The roads are plowed, so it really depends on if you happen to hit a snow storm the days you're traveling.

I think you are better off in November. The Haines pass can get some wicked spring storms.

Default Places to stay between Haines & Anchorage?

I will be taking the ferry from Bellingham to Haines, then driving on to Anchorage. Are there decent hotels between Haines and Anchorage? On MapQuest Maps - Driving Directions - Map, it looks fairly desolate on this route.

Thanks!

Pam

Yes there are but it depends on when you travel. The Milepost is the book to have for your trip anytime. Services are typically spaced well even in the deep winter however, you may not be able to get everything that you want. Few Marriotts

copy. I found the Haines to Haines Junction a good ride. Was looking at weather patterns for that time of year. Looks like if I miss the November departure then December Jan and Feb are the snowiest. To bad they only have two ferries from Whittier to Juneau/Haines this year.

You could get a room in Tok, AK and then make it into Anchorage on day two. Or you could go all the way from Haines to ANC in a long days drive, if the roads aren't too icy. It'll be a nice drive.
