Drove all the way from Anchorage to Tampa this summer. No way di dit cost us $7K. You can sleep in your car. Also, remember, you cannot load your car up with personal belongings if you ship it. I did get quotes to ship my car in lieu of driving. For me it would have cost about the same either way. Also, if you are shipping stuff, do it yourself. Here are two companies I recommend and have used both before.

DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) - Best quote I could find from Alaska and has used them before for our move from Seattle to Austin. Professional company and delivered on time.

ABF UPack - I have used these guys twice now. You load, they drive, you pay by how many feet you use. Payment is not due until they deliver it as the destination (your home). These guys are always on time, professional and courteous. I was lucky enough to where they said my load was 1 Lineal Foot shorter than I thought it was. This time we must have packed our stuff awesome. Nothing was damaged and had no breakage. I challenge anybody to say they have had the same results with a full service moving company that charged triple the amount.

Good Luck.
