Canadian here. Canadian banks are extremely stable, because they are feudal. They are all about total control - more than any other country in the Western world. They charge fairly steep fees, compared to US banks, and if you deal with real dollar amounts, they will question why or what you intend to do with the money. Wells Fargo is a better bank than any Canadian bank. A canadian credit union is your best option, unless you are dealing with canadians online, then a major canadian bank is good because you can email up to 1000 a shot with a 1.50 charge to your email. it is their most efficient service, but only applies to other canadian banks. In general, banks cheat you, so you will pay through the nose for any 'foreign money' exchange, etc. Hard to get ahead of these dudes. I would just stick with the US bank and save myself the irritation. it will be pricy no matter what.

Right now the CAD and US Dollar are pretty much even. All places on the highway will take the US Dollar but will give you Canadian change. This was last month on the drive south and north.

Does that include gas stations and lodging as a general rule?

If so, that's what we will do. We've got about $500 CAD left from the last trip so we'll supplement with US money.

Thanks. Very useful info on this thread.
