Default Food

Was thinking about all the times I've driven the Alcan and things I've learned while doing the drives. I've learned over the years is that where you see Semi trucks parked at a lodge in the middle of no where, the food and people are great there. Favorite stops are at Haines Junction, forgot the name of the place but they have good milkshake/icecream cones and burgers. Jake's Corner for a huge burger. Lower Post for the roast beef dinner or anything on the menu for that matter. Toad River for breakfast. The chicken place in Ft. Nelson(forgot the name). And last but not least, The Brookside Inn down at Chetwynd, BC. I'm heading down next month and I know that I'll stop in some of these places. What others are there out there?

Sounds like good advice to me! Don't know about places along the ALCAN, but in Seward my favorite place to eat out is the "Breeze Inn". There are fancier and costlier places, but the food isn't any better, IMO.

Bud

Actually, I think almost everything taste yummy when a person who have been driving for hours and are famished, thirsty and tired. But, I am sure you have good taste. Me? I prefer to cook my own.

Default best fried halibut

The best fried halibut I've had was (believe it or not) in a Chinese restaurant in Ninilchik, down past Kenai. It was done perfectly, light and crisp breading, ample portions, nice price. At the other end of the scale was a place called the "Bamboo room' in Haines. Theirs was so overdone it looked like charcoal, expensive too.

I forgot to mention the Brown Bear Rhodehouse five miles outside of Glennallen, very good burgers. Also the Clear Skyranch (I forgot the name) on the way to Fairbanks has good burgers, too. These are both bars and you have to put up with cigarette smoke.

FishTAxi is on a distinguished road
The Lucky Wishbone is a good place to eat. I found it cos all the cop cars were parked there.

On the highway the places have changed so much over the years. A lot the roadhouses have burnt down or gone out of business for various reasons. One being cars are built better with better gas milage than days gone by. No reason to stop if a tank will get you to the next gas station or beyond.

back in the day you were happy to see those roadhouses open when you needed gas, a tire repair or a bite to eat.

the tolsona lodge on the glen is a good place to eat. they don't have gas but they are on a lake and have a bar and cabins to rent. a little ways off the road. not the campground.
