We came in not knowing anyone and in 7 short months left knowing many wonderful charaters. We owna buisness now and with children our dream of returning seems further off than ever but hopefully we can at least visit soon!! Any one here from Skagway? Hows the weather where your at? It was almost 95 degrees and very humid here! Anyone ever been to the corner cafe? I used to work there. Yummy burgers..Skagways Mc Donalds.
Bye for now, Jess

Hi Jess, U did not say where U are now. I am in Haines for, so far, only a week + and the weather here was decided cool and a few sprinkles. There were a couple of warm days, Wed & Thurs but today, Fri., it is a little cloudy but but w/the sun peeking thru intermittently. Since this is a 'stones throw'
just across the bay, Skag' s/b the same. I guess everyone have a view of Skagway. From the tourist standpoint it is great. From the many shops and eating places standpoint, they love the tourist. From just the passer thru standpoint, the prices are out of sight.

Hi There from HAines
I never did catch your name. I must say that you are very right about Skagway. Way over priced on everything! We got lucky because their were good jobs in town that year and my hubby had one of them. We also picked up a puppy in dyea from the frenchman and he's over 100 lbs with a VERY thick coat! I love him dearly and he was our first child. I hope that you have a good experience up there! What is it like to live in Haines? We visited one time and found a lot better prices on the nessesities, but kinda desolate? Skagway had so many people from the cruise ships that the town looked like an ant hill. I miss the wonderful hikes and the crazy people. I hope to find some of them again. I know one thing it's a small world! I live in Vermont and I do like it here. We still have dirt roads and mountains but no ocean, seals, eagles or wolves. I love the wildlife up there most of all and have a deep respect for it. Alaska does make one learn to respect mother nature in all her fury.
Good bye for now Jess and family

Thanks bud thats another thing I like about Alaskans their nice. How is it up there in Seward? Is there many bears? Thats the one thing that freaked me out. I read a book oncce about a woman raising her family in the wilds of BC and they came across bears quite often. I applaud her and her family's courage. Too bad you can't live like that anymore.
Take Care, Jess

Jess, the state biologist just had to kill a bear here in Anchorage (black) for harassing hikers and bikers in Kincaid Park. It's still a fact of living here in Alaska, and bear smarts are taught in the primary schools (for the parents too complacent to do it themselves).

Wow 415k for a 3 bedroom, 2100 sq ft house. Maybe there are some kind of service jobs in town. Maybe a good retirement place.

real estate prices
If you think Anchorage is high, look at Juneau. Of course, there are a LOT of beautiful houses on the water with all the islands and inlets around there, but still. At least in Anchorage you can drive out to relatively affordable housing in the valley, in Juneau you're stuck.

I wish I could be there again,ak I mean
It almost seems like a dream that we were there. How was the breakfast anyway? What did you have? Was a partially bald man cooking? Too many ?'s I suppose but how was your stay? The heart of ak is in the grocerey store and the people libing the DREAM all winter long.
