My husband is interviewing for a job in Fairbanks next week. He has the impression that Fairbanks is the hunting and fishing capital of the world. Is this true? How much can a person hunt and fish throughout the winters there?
Also, what is the town like culturally? Any information is appreciated. Thanks. |

Have him start here: Online Licensing Home Page - Division of Administrative Services, Alaska Department of Fish and Game
And you may find some info here: The City of Fairbanks or here: FairNet, Inc or here: Fairbanks North Star Borough

Yes, hunting and fishing capital of the world. Seriously.
With a snowmobile a person can hunt for much of the winter. Otherwise it is a bit out of reach. Ice fishing is also v. popular and easy to do throughout the winter (lots of public cabins are available). Culturally... yeah it's the hunting and fishing thing. Also - lots of native activities, lots of 'granolas', the U. is here so there are students and university-types as well. Two military basis (Ft. Wainwright in town, Eilsen down the road) have a strong influence on FAI as well. Your perspective will depend on where you're coming from! We have a Chili's, an Old Navy, a Home Depot so we're not completely on another planet (but it seems like it sometimes)!!! ![]() |

Culturally, Fairbanks is home to the largest university in Alaska, UAF. GO ALASKA NANOOKS! Big Grin
As far as fishing goes I never go to Fairbanks to fish. Lots of folks up there go down to Chitina and to here in Valdez to fish reds, silvers and halibut. That doesn't mean there isn't good lake or river fishing around Fairbanks in the summer or winter ice fishing. Good link Rance gave to Fish & Game for hunting regs. Theres a cow moose hunt going on up there again this year that about guarentees meat in the freezer. Good Luck! |
