Hi there. I'm still considering it, but I have my reservations. I have no doubt that I would absolutely love the outdoors aspect, which is the main reason why I want to do it (WA state is getting way too crowded for my tastes), but I don't know a soul there, and that makes things especially tough. I'd be interested in a nice small community, but I have a hard time imagining how I'd find work as I know how difficult that can be in the rural areas around here.

If you moved to Delta Junction, there is a military base nearby with jobs. There are always restaurant jobs there but the pay is low. I do know how not knowing anybody can be tough, I had that problem moving back to Alaska. Move around Fairbanks and you would maybe have a few CD people to meet. I am a lot happier in Fairbanks but part of that is that I am closer to my grown kids who stayed nearby when I moved to Anchorage. I also got to meet some local CD friends which was really nice!

Ridiculous, I grew up in North Pole, Alaska. North Pole is a "suburb" of Fairbanks, but it isn't much of a suburb. I lived on a plot of almost six acres in rural North Pole, technically Badger. I lived there until I was fourteen and I loved every second of it. I am planning on moving back the second I can. I didn't read the other posts from everyone else, but just yours. My family moved there and bought land with a beautiful slough and built a gorgeous log home on it. You will definately be able to buy vacant land and make a home there. Believe me, even if you are on an acre, you will feel the solitude only Alaska comes with. Beware though, the interior has very pricey land and homes. At least North Pole, Fairbanks. Do you know where you are moving to yet? Or do you get to choose?

Nomad,

I am an expat - I'm presently working in Africa and it's looking like I'll likely be going to the Former Soviet Union next, my move is more like shifting my basecamp. I'll be gone for half the year, every year, at least.

Well since I'm not going to be working locally, at least not for a while, the choice will be mine. I'd like to do exactly as others are suggesting and actually travel around and see where I'd like to be. I had looked at a few parcels near fairbanks and found that it looked agreeable but my only objection to that location (and believe me, an objection is not a dealbreaker) is the fact that my buddy lives in Soldotna (Kenai Peninsula) so nearer to old friends obviously would be a consideration. For now I'm just waiting for January to roll around so I can get up there and take a look about. I periodically torture myself by looking at land and housing options but for the most part am preaching patience to myself
