It was pretty pretentious of Todd to mention the show at the store... But you have to think about how many people want to visit that area now, and will be spending money in that area? Ka-ching Ka-ching, they prob should have given him the supplies he needed in exchange for showing their shop on their show...
Of course Todd and his dad don't know what they are doing... Thats the fun of the show!!!
That's 'senorita' . I really don't watch those shows; they are phoney, anything for ratings.

Mr. Schabel actually enjoys what he does. He's made a kings ransom off that place. If you enjoy what you do why would quit? Plus they can only run the mine for about 5 months out of the year. Mr. Schabel doesn't remind me of the kind of mindless twitt that a round of tennis or golf.....Plus, we all know this show is about entertainment. It's much more entertaining this year then last year.

True True, don't get me wrong John Schnabz prob has a stock pile of nugs he is saving for a rainy day / has millions in the bank... But the real money maker is that show, as far as income producing positive cash flow...
Someone said some crazy person may try to approach Big Nugget Mine to steal.... I'll bet those fellers are armed better than the Alaska State troopers, prob shoot to kill first, ask questions later...
Also it isn't cheap to live in AK in summer... A gosh darn gallon of milk used to cost me like 9 bucks! Dear lord!

Yeah the show - Discovery - not the clowns - He did it by himself, they cannot.

Gold Rush," the reality TV show about inexperienced gold miners in the north, is getting good ratings, but so far it hasn't much helped the town of Haines in its prospecting for tourist dollars

I seriously doubt you'll see many miners drinking fresh milk. What's the point? They got calcium tablets for that anyway.

You people need a lesson in general entertainment economics, the gold is only to have a story... Especially this season, after the show has proven itself... There isn't enough gold left on the claim anyhow, its been picked clean from years and years of having been molested by washout technique prob, not to mention those huge earth movers... Schnabel would have been working the mine at 90 if he was loaded... And wouldn't he hire english speaking workers if he was raking in the cash / afford a professional miner to run the thing... Pennies doggies, pennies... Check out some of the mines they are building in China boy... U really want to see some production... ALL OF THAT SAID... Save the drama for your momma Discovery... Their disfunctional we get it! More diesel! More power!! thats what I say!!

Hey Blueflame... negative much? Sheesh, take a joke...
Don't reply to anything if the topic is closed, or if you don't want to...
The show is making the dough... This season the Hoffman crew have a new contract, based on their success from the first season of last year and the ratings (20% of prime time cable viewers, #1 Show on T.V.)... Im sure the entertainment lawyers they all have on retainer have negotiated fees that will leave them all extremely wealthy...
Many of the decisions they make are based on keeping the show afloat.... Clearly no one would up and move to another mine in one season unplanned after having lost their season's planned placer mine...
*****Also, Schnabel is an amazing person... Real rags to riches story, would love to shake his hand... *********

I would agree with you that the decisions are staged, but if those dudes in real life are how they are on the show, I could see them going for it. Especially Todd; the guy is reckless, but it just feels like it might work out in his benefit. That same recklessness is the whole reason he's there, and he'll have some great stories.

But yeah... they're gonna be just fine financially after this show. Which makes me think Jim Thurber is a good actor; the guy was crying on the show.
