How to become an Alaska resident?
1. Come! By road or by boat, by plane or just by being a stowaway. You got to be here physically, first. The ALCAN (Alaska-Canada) highway is a scene to enjoy. Tons of wild animals. The Ferry at Bellingham, WA or Prince Rupert, B.C. can bring you to Haines. Being a stowaway is not recommended, but an available option . 2. Have a place to stay and get yourself a drivers license. 3. Support yourself by getting a job. Unless your trust fund is healthy. 4. Who cares about your parents, if you are desperate to get away from them. Just let them know you are alive but emancipated in Alaska. 5. Good Luck!! P.S. Let us know how you are doing Last edited by 150/70; 02-25-2008 at 04:59 PM. |

-School -Rent -Telephone -Utilities (electric, water, heating fuel, etc.) -Insurance (including medical and such) -Food -Clothing -Transportation (car, bus, bicycle, etc.) -Gasoline for your car (if you have one) There are more things you would have to pay for, but that list is a start. |

I have had the aspiration to move to Fairbanks, AK for three years... I am 16, work 42 hours a week, pay my car insurence, cell phone bill, personal items, some food, gas, but not housing expenses... I know how much money I need to make the 3,996.4 mile journey from Memphis, TN to Fairbanks, AK... I'm budgeting about 2k for the whole trip... ( My Civic Si has been modified for racing the quarter mile so it isn't really fuel efficiant anymore...) But I won't do the emmancipation thing because even though my home life sucks butt, I can't pay all of the expensive bills necsessary to live in Alaska... Their economy is much higher than the lower forty-eight... Save up your money, DON'T PULL A CHRIS MACCANDLES AND DIE BECAUSE YOU FREEZE TO DEATH...

Don't do it. Your family may well consider you emancipated and completely cut you off if you just decide to up and move to Alaska. I really believe you should think long and hard about whether you are really ready to handle the realities of life alone in Fairbanks of all places. It's easy to not realize the little things your family does, until suddenly you're alone with no one to get your car out of the ditch, or you can't afford your groceries, or are unable to get medical care etc etc. There are a few things you might not have thought about, such as... As a sixteen year old, you are legally a minor, and not just a minor but a young minor. Alaska has so weird labor laws and it would be really bad if you got up here and, surprise! You are only allowed to work twenty hours a week. Furthermore, you will likely have trouble with the following things: -Medical care -Signing contracts of any sort -Medicines (if you're under 18, you need a prescription for a lot of over the counter crap like dimatapp) -Housing -Opening a bank account Living alone at 16 in the same town as a family member or close friend is one thing, moving across the country to an isolated alaskan community and living there alone is a completely different thing. You can choose to ignore what I've told you here, but do so at your own risk. This is something I have a lot of personal experience with and it would be unwise of you to not heed my advice. Smoking age is 19. That doesn't mean people don't violate it almost as much as the 1st amendment, but that's what it is. |

You may need to be 18 to cross the border into Canada or back into the US, might as well get your passport now!

You are a minor, they won't even let you get a hotel room for a night. I doubt that you have credit cards either. Good luck.

LadyScorpian must have been underwhelmed by all the suggestions. Have any of you seen any of her posting lately?
