My Husband and I are thinking of moving to Alaska this year, or next year, nothing is set in concrete though.

We're both in our early twenties, and have a 2 month old son. We haven't finished college yet, but my Husband does have a Commercial Drivers License.

Is there a wide variety of jobs there?

There is a wide variety, just not alot of jobs available right now. Come spring things might get better, especially trucking/driving.

At the same time, there is a very large number of drivers with CDL.

Almost everyone in AK has a CDL. My MIL has one.
I'd say, stay where you are, finish college and then come up. Jobs at McDonald's don't pay the rent.

Class-A CDL with the most endorsements possible is the best, but for some reason there are a lot of people who already have such licenses and endorsements in Alaska. For example, I have a Class-A CDL with Haz. cargo, double-triple tanker, everything in between, and I have not used it once in the past 20 years (not required at my work). A lot of my coworkers have similar licenses. Unions are big in Alaska, and certified drivers are plentiful. It means that one would have to get inline for such a job, behind a lot of very experienced drivers. Welders are plentiful, specially union welders, and also welders being trained locally. The same for computer technology, since these are taught at UAF and such.

Now, good (not just average) engine mechanics are always in demand, specially certified heavy equipment diesel-engine mechanics, to include engine-runned generators in the mix.
