But wait! There's more! Ginsu. Supplies were limited so I called the operator right away. Thankfully, they still had one left.

Classic red Victorinox Swiss Army, I think it was a "super tinker". Well, I used it until I accidentally had it in my carry-on bag at the airport and security made me toss it. That was a sad day! That reminds me I need to get a new one...

Hahaha!

I don't carry a sheathed belt knife, but my housemate does, and he carries a standard, full-lenth KA-BAR.

It's a 7" blade, so it's really not something you would want to carry around all the time ( ), but it's FANTASTIC for going out in the woods. You can do pretty much anything with that knife, straight edge or serrated. Comes in very handy. It holds an edge well, and it's tough as nails. Highly recommended.

But, if you want a little folding knife to carry around in your pocket on a day-to-day basis, I would definitely go with Benchmade. They are expensive, but with Benchmade, you truly get what you pay for.

One thing you need to be real conscious of is the type of steel the knife made of. Here's a link to a real good guide to all the different types of knife steels. This guy definitely knows his stuff, and it's a good, not too technical, guide to knife steels. He gives you the knowledge without bombarding you with really technical jargon.

Buying a knife is something you should do carefully, IMO, and doing a few weeks' worth of research is totally worth it in the long run. Better to do your research and spend a good $80-100 on a knife that you're going to keep forever than to buy some cheap, poorly researched knife that you won't have for very long at all.

Buck 110 folder for everyday carry. In the woods, I carry a custom bowie a buddy of mine made for me. I also usually have a couple of cheapo chinese stainless folders on hand for rough work. It's easier to shrug it off when you drop one of those in the river or tear up the blade stripping wire. ShipOfFools is right about the steel, though. I avoid stainless blades, unless I need a cheap tackle box knife. When my bud on the rez in New Mexico made my bowie, he did it right. High-carbon only, folks.
