Default No Morel Mushrooms!

Took my adventure buddy Devin, on a journey today in search of the wily and elusive morel mushroom

Devin (8), is a survivorman in training, as well as man against the wild. I've taught him to fully handle the boat, incase a bear mauls me!

It is so dry in the burn areas right now it sounded like walking on toast. There has been no rain in over a week along the mountains behind Skilak. Lot's of wildflowers

And the lake was very nice

Sorry Mal...those clouds blew back over the mountains and it's full on sunshine here again. We need some serious rain to bring out the shrooms.

Tomorrow...marine/naval "combat dipnetting", on the world famous Kenai River!

Still have a shirt for you. Morels are just a thing I have. Nasty habit, mushrooms. Been known to tear up families, ruin relationships, and cause some folks to go broke. Addictions are awful things, you know.

Raven and Bear is on a distinguished road
Default Beautiful photos

Those are some beautiful, beautiful photos. This is why we love Alaska. But did you find any mushrooms?

We went down the Kenai Peninsula this weekend and got caught in the horrible traffic from the motorcycle accident that happened near McHugh Park. We were stuck in the same spot for nearly two hours, but we were on the Seward Highway with a view that could not be beat: beautiful stark mountains, clouds hanging over them, low tide and the mud flats stretched as far as we could see, but the tide came in quickly, and lots of wildflowers along the roadside. We later learned that the biker was killed in the accident. As the traffic inched forward finally, we rounded a bend and saw an amazing sunset or orange and dramatic clouds. We all treasured it on behalf of the poor woman who won't get to savor any more beautiful AK sunsets. Life is precious, and living here moreso.

Default So I survived combat fishing!

What a day on the river. Had to be 75 degrees and just enough breeze to keep the bugs away. Some clickable thumbnails...
Lot's of boats (like a thousand) on the river dipnetting

The fishing was fairly good

The scenery was fairly good

My brother trying to lose a flounder...without actually having to touch it!

Mass amounts of boats and people. It's a wonder more don't end up in the river. And this was just dipnetters.

Those fishing for kings, were just as crowded...

Man...those kenai River reds are the best meat

Mal...today it's raining! Might even be some morels in a day or two!

I hear ya Raven. I was working out in Girdwood, Saturday until about 6:30. Headed home to Anchorage and got caught minutes after the accident happened. So...5 veryyyy long hours later, I finally made it home. Not exactly what I had planned for a Saturday night. Poor girl on the motorcycle. She died instantly. I believe she was trying to pass someone when the rain hit, lost traction and died for it. I could actually see the accident from where traffic got held up right on Beluga point. So I took my dog out and played around on the rocks.

Nice pics Rance.

Rance, Nice pictures, though I do have one question. Is Devin using one of those new Coast Guard approved Captains Chairs?

I have only tried them as auxilary seating in my old Jon boat.

Well actually it's a cheap lawn chair! But it's plastic, it floats, it's lightweight, and is easily removed from the boat for use onshore.
