If you like taking photos of the Northern Lights: a large solar flare is supposed to reach earth tomorrow, February 16th, or the day after. Anyway, at least in Alaska the Auroras are supposed to be quite active tomorrow and perhaps better the following night (the 17th).

I was planning on being out there taking pictures, but it's supposed to be cloudy and snowing in the interior.

Take a look at the forecast:

That's true, but it's already cloudy around Squarebanks.

The auroras should be quite active over Warp's side of the pond.

I decided to look out the window and the moon is nice and bright out there. So bright that it will probably overpower the Northern Lights tonight.

Yeah, nothing here either. There may have been, but like Ray said, the Moon was so bright last night and this early morning it was almost like day time. Doesn't look good for tonight with all the clouds and snow coming. Bummer!

I'm curious when my father used to take photos of northern lights with his 35mm film camera; he used to have to leave the shutter open for a good while. Do the digital cameras have to have a long exposure time like the 35mm film did?

Smokeyta, yes. Set your iso speed high, set up a tripod and set the exposure to 10-20 seconds. Results will depend on the camera/lens setup you've got. The faster and wider the lens, the better. It's cloudy up here in Nuiqsut (Prudhoe area), praying for it to clear up tonight!

Length of exposure is largely an inverse function of the amount of $$$ invested in your camera gear! Fast lenses and (good) high ISO cameras cost beaucoup bucks!
