This is perhaps the longest snowmobile race in the US, and posted here to the benefit of those of you who may want to know what sort of winter activities take place in Alaska. The Yukon Quest sled-dog race is ending, and the Iron Dog is beginning. This year the race course goes by the flood channel at North Pole to the finish line at Fairbanks, so there should be plenty of photo-taking opportunities at North Pole and the finish line.

I noticed that they haven't update the race's route through North Pole, but North Pole is listed in the GPS tacking:

It has been snowing during the day over here, then it clears during the night. But the moon has been so bright that its light overpowers a lot of the Northern Lights. I still managed a few good shots last night. Then this morning it started snowing and it has not stopped since

There is a winter weather advisory in effect until noon tomorrow. Not as much snow as between here and Anchorage expected, but maybe over 7 inches in some places, and high wind gusts at the summits nearby. Down in Fairbanks and the low areas outside the city, it has not been windy at all for weeks, so the willow and birch trees are over-loaded with snow. Some are bent down to the ground. The spruce can handle snow, however.

last year they went on the sea ice across most of norton bay.

we're in the process of losing most of that ice (there's open water right next to shore in some places).
i noticed today that trail markers have been added to the overland trail. that should take quite a bit more time than going on the ice...
