I would recommend a caliber not as powerful as the .300WM, and one that factory ammo for is readily available locally. But you are from Texas. Right?

That said, I have seen a lady shooting a .375 H&H at a shooting range in Fairbanks, and one of my formers supervisors' wife not only shoots his .338WM at the range, but develops loads for it. All I am trying to say is that it's hard to tell which caliber would be the best, unless you have the chance to shoot different caliber rifles, and then decide which one you would be comfortable with.

If you feel that you are recoil shy, you may want to give these a try, the top one being the one that produces the most recoil, but comfortable for most people:

a. .30-06
b. .308
c. .270 Winchester (the plain and old .270)
d. 7mm-08 (ammo more difficult to find, but a nice one nevertheless)

Thank you. I know the local gun ranges will rent out guns so I will give these a try. My husband is talking to the Home Depots up there to get a transfer in this summer. so were trying to get everything in order.

Yes we are moving, no its not really a concern, my hubby wants to hunt moose and I figured that a gun that I can use wouldnt hurt. I'm always open to any advice you are will to give things I should be concerned about etc.

I like the 45 70. It's got a kick but with an 18 inch barrel it's perfect for home defense and just walking the trails with a sling. Not as big, lightweight and powerful.

Did I say it has a................KICK?
