I thought since the mad cow days you couldn't bring Canadian meat to the States and no States meat to Canada.

Canada appears to have greater restrictions on Beef then other meats, but I could be wrong....CFIA will be who I spend my morning on the phone with! Thanks again for all the wonderful answers, and the driving the Alcan information again!

I'm driving up from Eastern Washington but have to go through Seattle before I leave. Scared to death, not really sure about this driving thing, but I guess its all part of the "Alaskan experience", but can't wait to get there. No matter how much time you spend driving on snow there is something mentally different about being all alone in northern canada.

You do have your passport, right?

You'll be fine, if you happen across a storm, wait it out and ask about road conditions ahead. Don't let your tank go under a half, don't pass up a gas station if it's near a half further north you go. Canadians take great care of the highway to remove snow on the roads. Don't take highway 37, the Cassiar. Stick with 97.

How to Drive to Alaska in the Winter - ExploreNorth

Don't drive between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake at night, lots of animals on the road. Well, there are a lot of animals on the road everywhere. North of Toad River Lodge is where you start to run into bison on the road, keep an eye out on them, impossible to see at night.

Yippy I made it mostly safe across the Alcan and Alaskan Highway. And I only had one breakdown, and one minor set back! Sure is nice to have mountains, snow and trees again, awww and the cold!! I missed my crackling wood stove at night, the simple pleasures in life!

Sadly I didn't take a lot of photos because of the lack of places to get off the road to take them, and when I could get off the road, it was snowing! Thanks so much to everyone for the tip on not to drive between fort nelson and watson lake! Where is everyone from? Where do I go to put photos? Can I post here or where do I post the few I have?
