This series is all about drilling bracelet pieces.
While following this thread for 30 pages and all of the newly posted video's. you have a great understanding of how to do all the simple steps and begin the next step: Learning how to market your products !!
A 14 piece bracelet and the angle to bevel the pieces was 14 degrees also.
A SHOWCASE; of bracelets we made this weekend; tuesday we will not go out. Wednesday we will go out with at least 8 - 10 bracelets. We have scheduled to purchase two new large pieces of Ivory from our new supplier. Hopefully TWO fossil tusks with great colors.
Actually .. we celebrate all day every day. I just have nothing interesting to show you in this post. No videos !
Polishing a bracelet using the new 'foredom' - 'bench lathe' tool. This small wheel wore down very fast. Just start the unit up and hold the compound against the wheel to absorb compound on the cotton wheel.
Polish to a brilliant shine. Repeat as necessary to provide a uniform shine on all of the different pieces.
Just let the wheel do all the work. Apply more compound to the wheel as necessary.
As you can easily see. this tool throws up much debris. Cotton shreds and compound.
A new batch of pre-fabbricated bracelets all lined up - ready to process the remaining steps to produce a final product. Then begin all over again & again & again. Quite boring - or quite exciting - all depending on how you approach this 'job'!!
We spent $400 @ our new source for purchasing Ivory. We have high hopes of obtaining a piece of fossil ivory with magnificent colors.
It is hard to find. It is rare - very rare and when it is available, the prices are much higher - for the 'finished' product!
This is the surprise - nuttin !! white - mostly core = male walrus. No colors to speak of- but we can bring this faint colors out to much darker colors by soaking the pieces in baby oil or mineral oil for a few days.
The other end has much better colors in one area. We will try again; to pick out a piece that has what we want - on the inside - There really is no way to tell what you will find when you cut it open.
MONTH #3 Just began. We have quite a nice stash of ivory now on hand. More coming in today. (whoops) that didn't happen.
Has it occured to anyone yet ??? You can do these same exact simple steps - using 'wood'!
You can easily see where the knots will be placed inside this one piece.
The #1 reason we make so much income ? We hustle ! We stick to the same routine day in and day out. Up @ 7:00 a.m. Working by 8:00 a.m. Out the door by 11:00 a.m. Back home during the early afternoon; pre-fab for the next day for a couple / few hours. REJOICE & GIVE THANKS all day long every day.
We were out the door this morning with six bracelets -
The boys were back home by 3:00 p.m. They sold one bracelet! We are very thankful & tonight @ Northern lights bingo for one hour ( 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.) - then we will see how this day ends !!
Tommorrow we repeat, the same ol, same ol routine.
My sons enjoy doing this so much - the day(s) just fly bye. We were sick of sitting & waiting - SO... we got back to work - April the oneth!!
We have made a lot of progress and a lot of bracelets during the past two months.
And had lots & lots of Pizza delivered !! Another - two Extra Large 18" just ordered. time to go eat & have some fun!!
We like to play scrabble & puzzles and do things together as a family unto the wee hours of the morning!!
We have "many" positive signs - that our crisis situation will be completely finished and case closed soon - very soon !!
TOO many people from Point Hope & Barrow are in Anchorage - they are mad - they are extremely ticked off!! We see them almost 'daily' coming out of the Federal Court House here in Anchorage !!
I have a new technique that I have not shown you here yet in this thread.
A white ivory bracelet with baleen lines inserted in the ivory pieces!!
This 'pattern' can be straight lines or zig zag or even crossed like a tic-tac-toe box.
Here is the detailed process - step by step !!
Slice the ivory lines with a coping saw about 1/8" deep. Insert the baleen pieces with super glue - sand the baleen down flush with the piece of ivory. It is actually quite a simple process to achieve and presents a different type of look for the bracelet pieces.
The more varied the styles; the more repeat customers we obtain. Native women have huge collections of bracelets. We know of one woman that has purchased well over 100 bracelets from us in Anchorage, Kotzebue, Point Hope & in Barrow during seven years time!!
Ever wonder how we get all of the pieces of ivory the exact same thickness ? Here is a video showing how this is easily done.
During one of the last video's you saw; baleen lines being inserted into a piece of ivory.
Here is what we finished up on making this morning; This first image was created last night - this morning we finished all three of these.
Out the door @ 11:00 a.m. today's (possible) buyers are: Native hospital- Mon - Wed - Fri 10:a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Alaska Native arts foundation. They are buying this month.
The Musuem in downtown Anchorage.
These are straight lines, they can also be used in a wave like zig-zag fashion. We will be making more of those soon. We have lots of different designs we haven't taken the time to make yet. But in time we will have them all available right here.
All you have to do.. .. is learn how to use your imagination in ways you never thought possible. Excercise your.. .. imagination!
A striking contrast of black & white - something different!!
This is how we know how many bracelets we have made.. .. We just finished a box of bracelet boxes time to get a new one. And one for ear-rings as well. Our ear-ring case, has about 20 boxes left. Might as well get another one of those also.
The accurate count of the amount of bracelets we have made now sits @ 3,504.
I know that exact # based on how many cases of boxes we have purchased. We are steadly making 90 bracelets per month.
A funny thing happened last night @ the Polar Bar in Anchorage. Mark had been called down there; via a phone call. He went and was showing several bracelets and talking to people @ a table. One woman we know named Sarah; just walked up and said; Hi Mark... This is mine !! She grabbed this bracelet and just put in her pocket. Mark said - put it back now; she refused; the bar maid was yelling @ sarah - give it back or I'll call the police. Mark said. NO! don't do that. If she wants it that bad - let her have it. I know from past experiences (other people) what will happen. He smiled and just left.
I've known Sarah for 30 years, She and her sister are originally from Barrow but have been living on the streets for over 30 years time.
For some people - this is the only way they can get anything; is to just TAKE IT. It is a very BAD HABIT.
This has happened in the past many times. We shrug it off and move on.
The end.. of another week - another new tusk $486.00
This next part is always the most exciting part - cutting it open to reveal what patterns colors are formed.. ...
Aw... some color(s) in the small end of the tusk. Lets see what the other end which is larger has for colors. This is the end that is important.
Oh well, drat, this is not what we were hoping for; but you can notice the very faint color - lines - patterns that are ever so faint. As we sliced this ivory to begin prefabricating the pieces, we placed the slices in baby oil over night.
Now you can see very FAINT - COLORS !!! PATTERNS & LINES!!
After an evening soaking in baby oil, the boys woke up to find a distinct difference in the color(s) on the slices of ivory.
The boys just left with all three bracelets and they are already sold before we even got out the door. The phone rang.. A person who has a booth @ Saturday Market - The Bed & Breakfast place on Arctic. Bring me everything you have were the words he spoke to Mark!!
Lovely colors and designs on these bracelets -
Have a great weekend!!
