It is not cold and snow that make life miserable during winter time. It is DARKNESS. It is proven that lack of sun exposure is one of the main causes of many types of cancer. Senior citizens will do better and live longer anywhere but Alaska. Something to consider......

Florida?? No, thanks! My whole reason for moving from VA is to get to a cold climate - any state south of here is not a consideration - I pray for snow year-around! Everything about it fascinates me - the dark, the stillness, the beauty - the food, the clothes, the outdoor activities during cold months - all are even better than in summer! Good ole comfort food tastes so much better after coming in from the cold, ya know? To each his own!

The lack of sunlight in the winter isn't so bad, and can be easily compensated by adding a few extra lights around the house. Alaska also gets an abundance of sunlight in the summer. In my opinion, winter is the second prettiest season of the year (fall being the prettiest) with the hoar-frost hanging on the branches of the trees, the snow glistening in the moonlight, and the northernlights dancing overhead.

Regarding having a one room place, you may be able to have something similiar without all the work. There are beautiful cabins and small homes that have "wild" yards, so there is little work to do. I would caution a move to Fairbanks only becuase the winters are long and very cold. But small wild yard homes are available in both places. Each city has its charm. We have some small and large homes here at Bayshore Owners Association and you can check us out on the web at Bayshore Clubhouse in Anchorage, Alaska Common areas are maintained by the Association. If you have any questions about Bayshore, you can let me know. We do not handle any sales at all, but we do have a beautiful clubhouse which is unusual for any homeowner association in Alaska. It includes a fitness room, swimming pool, and more. I hope we see you up here in Alaska - you won't find a more beautiful or diverse state!

I have reason to believe that exposure to the sun is more harmful than lack of it. I have no issues with the lengthy darkness of winter. I kinda like it after the long summer daylight hours. And I'm shooting for 100 yoa!

Gee, we get cancer by being exposed to the sun, and we get cancer by not being exposed to the sun. So I guess we are doomed to always get cancer. I can die a happier camper knowing that there isn't anything I can do about it.

One thing about Fairbanks: although you may be invigorated when talking about cold weather, I can tell you that there is nothing invigorating about temperatures from -20 to -65. In fact a little wind at -20 will easily freeze exposed skin, earlobes, etc.
When it gets to around -40, rubber starts getting brittle, the belts in you car start breaking, as well as the CB boots on the drive axles. You won't see too many people walking around when it's -40 ![]() |
