Default St. Paul Island

I have applied for a job on St. Paul Island and was wondering if anyone had abit of insight as to housing costs to rent and availability of basic amenities? IE: TV,Internet, health care etc.
This job is for the City Govt. and pays fairly well but I really would rather not spend it all on subsistence living..lol

why would one apply for a job without researching cost of living/housing etc. before applying?? just curious as it seems it would waste the prospective employers time.

Kudos for doing all of your research before getting there. I have been actively researching Alaska - but not a remote island in the Bering Strait.

I am sure that you have already figured this out, but here is my .02, since you asked:

If you like being isolated looks like the place to go. I can't imagine it is cheap to live there - I haven't found a remote place that is cheap so far. So finding out actual prices of the commodities you will use, like you are doing is important. I also don't think you will have a wide variety of housing options. I would also look at what it costs to fly to and from there - at one point you are going to want to leave the island and it would be nice to know if it is going to cost you 2 months pay to do it. I wouldn't be surprised if it took a couple of days to get back to the lower 48. I hope you don't have to move a lot of stuff either.

I wish I could provide you the answers you are searching for, but hopefully I have at least made you think of some more questions to answer for before you accept the job.

At least St. Paul Alaska is part of United States. Higher qualifications will land that job. Don't have to worry about high price of gas for travel around small island. One might like web site. http://www.remoteproperties.com

I've been to St. Paul a couple of times. Never checked into housing costs, etc. You'd do most of your shopping via mail order/internet. Health care would be limited to the village health clinic. No hospital or private medical clinics.

The links below will give you an overview of some of the facilities. You won't find any info on rent here or on the internet. You'll have to ask your prospective employer about that. Rentals are limited.

Thx..I did find that link..and this one as well.. http://www.city-data.com/zips/99660.html in fact this link is how I found this forum.

I am hoping that the rents are not in the $800-$900 range as the city-data link implyed...do you have any idea about utility costs?...I know they have a fairly large wind farm for elec.
And if you "eat like a native" can you keep food costs reasonable?...lol

How do you like your seal cooked? If you are a non-native I don't suggest going out an getting one yourself though.

If you have to "mail order" groceries, get ready to fork out a few months of groceries at a time.

Although looking at the Wiki it looks like a lot of summer time stuff goes on there...

I still think it would be a fun and unique experience, so don't take my comments as negative towards the place.

On Edit: Looking at the link you provided. 0.23 per K.Whr for electric is quite high. I hope you don't have to use electricity for anything other than a few lights, refrigerator, and a computer. Although I wonder what the fuel cost is for heat. Look like they have phone, internet, and cable...
