I know, it did provide a certain amusement, didn't it? Oh well, there's plenty of other people we can laugh at. Around here, they come to us, on big boats clad in glorified garbage bags and white tennis shoes, clutching canvas bags and disposable cameras! Oh the merriment that could be had!

Yeah, except sometimes it just isn't funny anymore, like today when a bunch of merrymaking white shoes off the big boats were down by a local creek catching the spawning salmon in their hands, holding them up, and having their pictures taken by their cheering friends and family before throwing the salmon back into the very shallow water and killing them.
There were children with sticks poking the salmon as well. Oh well. They're just humpies. They're just toys I guess, part of what SE sold out. Never mind that they comprise about half of the commercial catch here in SE. Lord forbid that the cruise ship people should be slapped with the $1000 fines that they rightfully deserve for this behavior or that the city should put up signs stating why the spawning salmon should be left alone. I would dearly relish seeing how that behavior would be treated in communities such as Petersburg and POW. Sorry but what I saw today really...that and the glorious haze hanging over us that at first reminded me of that first haze of autumn, but then I realized where all the smog was coming from.... |

That's horrible!! Some people have absolutely no respect for nature. They come on the cruises claiming they want to see wildlife but when they see it they go and kill it.
![]() Miserable excuses for human beings. I hope their boat sinks. ![]() ![]() |

What concerns me is that this is apparently quite common behavior here when the runs begin.
This particular creek only gets humpies; nonetheless, pinks comprise almost half of the state's commercial salmon catch. I do intend on making a complaint with the city, but lord forbid anyone breathe in the wrong octave concerning the floating food bins. |

I know, it's the same way in Juneau. We have this beautiful boardwalk along the channel downtown and now there's a big yellow fence running down the middle, to prevent people from getting to the cruise ships. It also prevents us from getting to the water. Mind you, it's easy to climb over it, but the area is always swarming with dark-sunglass-clad thugs patrolling to keep us pesky locals in line.
![]() I'm curious, do you live in Metlakatla or Ketchikan? I would have thought Metlakatla, because of the name, but I didn't know the ships went there... ? |
