Holy carp. I'da checked this thread earlier if I'd known it was so entertaining.
I work my hiney off to live as much a subsistance life as I can...all year long. I order bulk dry goods twice a year, the rest is up to me. It's hard constant work - no time for a "real" job and I wouldn't live any other way.
You can't do it with an "attitude" tho. You can't do it alone, you need friends to help do the things you can't do by yourself, friends who will be there on a moments notice anytime because they know you will. If you can't listen and learn, give more than your share and work 'til it hurts you better stay in the city.

Your last paragraph are words to live by in my experience of living a rural lifestyle for most of my life. I suspect though that they would apply to living most anywhere that a person finds themselves.
