Probably, but in all honesty, you'll look like a tourist who is afraid of freezing to death in August. Which you won't.
Save your money, wait and buy local. Better selection, better prices. Especially if you're going to Anchorage. Just my .02 cents.

I see your moving to Anchorage, Congratulations on your graduation and future studies. I agree you should remain calm and wait to see what most everyone else is using. A nice polar fleece jacket or lined wind breaker will be a great start. Most likely what you wear at home for those cold days will be fine initially in Anchorage. I think down is an overkill. I only wear it when the temp drops to -35 or so here in Fairbanks. Boots will come as the season changes. Save your money and just enjoy Alaska for a bit. We have everything you need to survie and ENJOY the winters here.

I agree, you should wait until you're in Alaska. I wouldn't wear either of those living in Northern Minnesota, where it gets really cold, but not quite as cold. In the winter I'd usually wear a sweatshirt with layers and my fleece thing from NorthFace. Even in 60 below and I never wore winter boots, just hiking boots (unless I was ice fishing) . I'm stubborn.

I agree. It is quite possible to overdress and sweat in your "outdoor" gear. Not good.

It would not hurt to have extreme temp gear if your into skiing or camping or hiking or snowmachining or icefishing. You'll be glad to have it. But I'd wait until you get here to order or buy that stuff. You'll just be lugging excess weight and baggage. You'll have a few months to settle in and get climatized. It won't get real cold for a few months yet.

Default fleece, fleece is good

Repeat after me....fleece is good...

Like I said earlier, a pair of flannel-lined Carharrts and a couple different grades of fleece jackets will cover you for most everything till you have a chance to find out what you really need and do some shopping.

Save the down jackets and bunny boots for when you develop an ice-fishing habit or acquire a taste for snowmachining.
