Yup.

If you're getting on the ferry in Bellingham and staying on board until at least Ketchikan you do not need a passport. As long as you don't disembark in Canada you're fine.

Where are you seeing $400? If it is that much, it would be cheaper for you to fly from Juneau to Anchorage, and have your girlfriend just drive the rest of the way, than to get the passport.

I agree Tigre. We're checking into it. We'd be leaving AR on May 23, which is 10 business day. All the "rush a passport" services are estimating $370-415 to have a passport rushed to my address within 5-7 business days.

Ok folks. I called Border Control and they said that as long as I have a valid (state issued ID), a copy of my birth certificate, AND I apply for a passport (without having it expedited) then I'll be permitted to reenter the US. Apparently, when you apply for a passport you're mailed a receipt confirming you've applied and are in the process of requesting a passport. This receipt will substitute for a legal passport. She admitted that I might suffer a small delay, but it would be nominal.

Whew! So at least I won't have to pay a third party to have it expedited. :-)

Dodged a bullet on that one!

Interesting... Be preapared to wait in Canada until it comes in. You can apply at Post Offices and do not need a 3rd party to get your passport expedited.... looks like $72 (expedite fee + overnight shipping) and $55 for the passport CARD only. That equals $127, which is what I remember paying at the post office for mine. (plus the photo fee).

Also, they are very quick on turnaround time. My wife just got hers and it took about two weeks for it to gt here. If you're close to a Customs office, you can apply directly there and sometimes speed it up even more.
