Salcha floods once more (happens yearly) (Fairbanks, Eielson AFB: houses, neighborhood, buy)

Salcha along the Richardson Highway floods just about every year just before summer, but people still build homes in this area of Alaska by the Tanana River.

Actually, it's Ray's mischaracterization of the situation that isn't very smart.

I doubt that many, if any, homes have been built in the past 15 or 20 years where it is flooding. And the people who are getting flooded have a very reasonable gripe about it too! It's a man made problem, and they aren't the man that made it.

The specific places that are flooding have houses built there before the "flood project" work was done to protect North Pole and Fairbanks. Part of that work was to dredge a couple of areas, and put in rock along certain banks, far up stream from the dikes and the dam and spillway between the Chena River and the Tanana River (at North Pole).

After they started trying to direct the river's flow up river from North Pole, the areas just down river from that work began to flood where there had never been flooding before. And every time there has been new work done it has changed the specific areas that get flooded.

So, as is common with Ray's discussion, what we have here is the concept that money spend by government to help Ray (protecting the areas around North Pole and Fairbanks, where he lives and works) is appropriate! But no money should be spent on those fools in Salcha who have lost their homes in the process of assisting Ray.

Without going into details, Floyd, I must say that you are confused or drunk. The area along the Richardson and the Tanana referred to in the article has nothing to do with the flood project. The flooding taking place is located several miles away from the flood project, by the "Boondox" (the old cabin that burned several years ago). I go there every year to take photos of the ice jambs that cause the floods

He didn't read the article, I guess See, the flood project is in North Pole, while the Bonndox is a long way past Eielson AFB at the other side of Salcha. The Boondox burned perhaps eight years ago, if I well remember, and was rebuilt shortly after. Some newcomers buy land in that area without realizing that the ice jambs downstream from the Boondox on the Tanana causes the floods. Two days ago the water was flowing over the Richardson Highway just upstream from the Boondox.

Well, you nailed part of it. You are confused and probably drunk.

The area along the Richardson referenced most certainly does have something to do with the flood project. Go read up on it. Just because that one newspaper article you read doesn't give the whole history doesn't mean the history didn't happen.

The Boondox is at 33 mile. The work done by the Army Corps of Engineers, as part of the flood project, extended both up river and down river from that point. Get out a map and look at Piledriver Slough, which was the target of most of the work that has resulted in flooding along the Old Richardson.

The "Chena River Flood Project", idjit, included work on the Tanana River that was farther up stream than the Boondox, all the way to well past the mouth of the Chena River in Fairbanks. It also included work on the Chena River, over 20 or more miles, as well.

Are you actually that ignorant of the area you live in? All that government money spent just to protect your home! That's okay though, right? Isn't government there just to help Ray? It's those other people getting help that is a waste of money!
