The move to Alaska is starting to look pretty promising; things are falling into place. So now for my question: for those of you that live around Anchorage and the peninsula, what are your favorite winter hobbies?

Hunting for fossil ivory would be awesome. I hope to do some exploring once I get up there.

We don't live over there, but we have winter here, too. Snowmachining, skiing of all varieties, and snowboarding are the big things here (and there are plenty of places over there for those activities, as well). Bonfires are just as much fun out in the snow as they are in the summer, too.

Since everyone's outside so much more in the summer I think more of the inside stuff gets done in the winter. So there are more indoor house projects like painting, crafty things like knitting or crochet, dinner parties, hot tubbing (much better when it's cold out), and those sorts of things. And a lot of people go on vacation in the winter, especially in December when the kids are out of school, the days are short, and there's not really enough snow yet to go out and play.

This is supposed to be about WINTER TIME HOBBIES.

I thought every one knew that photography and hunting for fossil ivory is always done indoors.

I actually enjoy camping in the winter. Call me crazy for that (and some people do), but the tougher the weather the more I relish the challenge. It can be a very expensive hobby for sure. Boy Scouts in the North Star can earn a "zero degree" badge. It's fun to push it further and further down to -40 and below.

sledding.
it doesn't get any less fun as you age, and it doesn't require any particular skill.

Yeah, sledding is a lot of fun. On New Year's Eve we had a party at a house up at the top of a hill, with a mile-long winding road leading to it. So of course, we sledded all the way down, both in individual sleds and in a big wood-hauling sled with about ten people crammed in it. That was pretty ridiculously fun.
