Default Easiest/Cheapest means to get to Alaska?

Looking to Visit AK to scope it out for College. Who knows the cheapest way to get there? I don't mind long travels. But in your experience, what turns out to be the cheapest? Land? Sea? or Air?

looks like your in VA.....lot depends on time that you have....flying is fairly reasonable but you will have to rent a car once you arrive and that adds up quick...driving would probably be the better with a trip experience that cannot be beat and you can always sleep in your car....pitch a tent etc.

They're kind of competing requirements...

Easiest:- Flying with car rental
Cheapest:- Walking; anywhere on the North and South American contiguous continents is within walking distance if you have enough time.

Driving might not be very much cheaper than flying given the price of gas these days, it would depend on the vehicle, according to Bing (since Google didn't give me a route <shocker!>) it's 4364 miles Burlington to Fairbanks, in my truck that's ~$1100 in gas given an average of 600 miles per tank, and $150 a fill up (based on $4/gallon), even with 1000 miles per tank and $150 a tank, when you add in passport charges (if you don't already have a passport) for driving through Canada it's only $100 or so less than flying, and it's ignoring any replacement tires, and servicing your vehicle might need after 4300 miles. A flight according to Expedia is as low as $950

Hey my cost to fly to Fairbanks is $80 on Warbelows...

I don't need to look around for flights to Fairbanks there's only one per day, no options, no in flight service, only one engine, and it's gas powered

Driving someone else's car up to Alaska might be the cheapest. You'd only have to find a way back if you wanted to return.
