Yeah! I mean, on the maps I've been using all my life, Vegas is a chunk of land only a little to the left of Iceland....shouldn't it be a LOT cooler?

Hehehe, I dunno, he was cracking up pretty good there at the end. I would be too. That's just unbelievable. "Um, many US Americans, um, don't have maps, so like, Africa!"

It is a misconception that Alaska is cold. In fact, Alaska is the warmest place on earth during the winter for its latitude range. Look at Yellowknife, Canada and Omyakon, Yakuts, etc in Siberia, Russia, they are all tenfold colder than Alaska's coldest city even at lower latitude.
Oymyakon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yellowknife - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Verkhoyansk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

compared to Fairbanks, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairbanks#Climate, not cold at all

The question that I've always wanted to ask to climatology experts is that why is Fairbanks so much warmer than Yellowknife and other Canadian or Russian cities at similar latitude. Fairbanks would be tantamount to Miami, FL when put into comparison with these colder subartic climates in Canada and Russia.

Um, dude, the figures for the Canadian and Russian places are in degrees Celsius. Fairbanks is in degrees Fahrenheit.

Yeah, Fairbanks is totally not cold at all.
