From what I see, the original word "alaxsxaq" comes from the Aleut language; it means "mainland," "continent."
Aleuts are indigenous people who live....right there

Alaska
Quote:

Name: "Alaska" came from an Aleut word for "great land," though some believe the Aleut word meant "mainland," referred to it by those residing on the Alaska Peninsula. Scientist and surveyor William Healey Dall wrote in 1870: "This name, now applied to the whole of our new territory, is a corruption, very far removed from the original word . . . called by the natives Al-ak-shak or Al-ay-ek-sa. From Alayeksa the name became Alaksa, Alashka, Aliaska, and finally Alaska. We have, then Alaska for the territory, Aliaska for the peninsula."

Alaska today refers to the entire state as well as the Peninsula. "Alyeska" is still around, though, as the name of a ski resort in Girdwood, as well as the name of the Anchorage consortium overseeing the trans-Alaska pipeline company.

I am kind of surprised with the advanced technology of producing flow of economic growth with individuals and people. Less towns cities in the state Alaska. I think average person in United States looks at Alaska wow it's part of Canada or Russia. They don't realize Alaska is American.

isn't that the truth... all these reality shows are giving people the urge to move to Alaska... hopefully it will just stimulate the economy and get people to visit and drop some money in the state. Most people would not be able to handle the life style because they are too comfortable with all their many "drive throughs" and city conveniences... I live here because of my job... on my 2 year plan to get that changed... no reality show brought me to that decission.. I want to escape these conveniences and work with my hands and enjoy my accomplishments... even if it is just keeping food on my table..

Thank you for the history of the name Ray...

Alaska means to me. Peace & Saftey solitude in the great outdoors. When mankind can catch big game fish and live off the land. When small planes dare to fly close to the snow capped mountains. Education Schools bring new hope for future growth of Alaska. When progress meets up with the natives.

Getting rid of drive thru's and too many big box stores is one of the allures for us. My girls were whining their way through Target the other day and begging me for everything is sight. I told them that they would not be able to do that where they are going. They asked me why and I told them because there are no stores there. They looked at me like they could not comprehend this and thought I was lying. I couldn't stop laughing.
