Moving to Alaska
Hiya, I am looking into moving to Alaska, around the Stebbins area and I am wondering if there are any places for rent there, possibly with the option to buy later. If so, how much is the rent, how many bedrooms, will I be able to keep my cat, etc. It will be me and my cat and my puter of course. Is there electricity there also and what is the closest internet access. Thank you very much.

thank you
Thank you, that link didnt work for me. I am hoping to find something far away from anchorage or any of the bigger cities up there. I will work on reading the paper up there too, juneas and anchorage's so I get an idea. When or if I do make it coming up to Alaska to move or even visit, where are some good websites to get directions for driving up there, internet capabilities for the places I want to either move to or see, housing available, etc. Thank you for your help.

Info finding
hi,
I am moving to AK in May and have been planning this for over a year. The best way to find out info about a specific city is to find the website for the city. Most of the places have them. Then write the city council or commissioner or what ever they call it. Or go to the Alaksa Job Bank, find some job openings in the area you want, and try to make some contacts. The main AK state web site has tons of info and links.
As for your cat, you will need a 3 year rabies vaccination with certificate to gain entrance to Alaska. If you are flying the cat up, as I am mine, you will need to check with the airlines (air cargo) for carrier specs and health certificates needed.
If you are driving through CN, you will only need the 3 year rabies vaccination.
Internet access will probably be via satelite. Many of the small towns do not have roads to them and you can only get there via plane or water. So be prepared for the added expense to get your stuff there.
If you can get a job before you go, most companies will have some type of relocaton monies available.
I am driving frm Atlanta to Anchorage. We are taking about 3 weeks to do it, camping out at night and checking out the national parks along the way. I am flying up my cats later. Hopefully I will have a job lined up in the next few weeks. I am looking at Dillingham - no roads, 2000 people...yeehaw...lol
Hope this helps

Lynda - go to a bookstore and buy a copy of the MILEPOST. It is a mile by mile guide up the Alcan Highway. It is literally the bible for the trip up.

OMG!! I've lived in Alaska for nearly 40 years..... drove up here with no map and the Alcan Hiway was a dirt road. Now it's paved and the "wickedness" of it is gone.... just set your cruise control and kick back. Be sure to bring lots of $ as things are more expensive along the way. As for the Milepost.... it's interesting to be sure. But if you just fill your tank at every reasonable place you won't have any problems. (still a good idea to carry an extra 5 gal can tho... just in case you miscalculate!) But honestly, the Alcan is in better shape than I-40!

Thank you all for some help. I am wondering what kind of market is up there for Medical office specialists, accountants and such. I agree about the small towns, yay. I am a country girl hehe. Sadly my cat got ran over back in June. I will check on the online papers for the areas that I have put down as ones I may like to live in or visit =).
