Exclamation WORKAMPERS - the BEST route to Alaska

Many posts exist about people "coming" to Alaska and the difficulties that hinder them from making that move.

Here is a solution, a trend, that is quickly becoming "The Way 2 Go" !!

Boomers Hit the Road as 'Workampers'

IMO this is not a good idea; no place is good to end up homeless or broke...Alaska is one of the worst places. This might work better in the -48. If you can't afford it - wait until you can.

I know some people whose parents do this, only they are "hosts" or whatever and state and national parks. It sounds kin of interesting, really, but it seems more geared for people who are already retired and who happen to have an RV. I'm not sure that buying an RV specifically to do it would be cost effective unless you were going to sell your home as well.

Pat, I did see a campground in the Kenai advertising for someone to do this. I'd advise anyone from the lower 48 wanting to do it in Alaska to have work already lined up before they came up. I know that Princess Lodges offers RV sites for employees.

Actually I'm considering putting in a space and offering it for free for some ex military/retired type of guy in exchange for watching after the place.

I'm just wondering how much work they could find in the winter months.

That would be a deal for a retired person with a pension.

We have 3 campgrounds within a couple miles of my house in Sterling. Every summer there are new hosts. Usually an older couple retired and cruisin the country with a 5th wheel camper. Always some nice folks.
Skilak Lake has a handful of campgrounds and each one has a host. They keep a good look after the places and unsually have any current news on bear activity in or near the campgrounds.
