Thank you
The oil service companies in Alaska hire 60-80% of their professional positions from outside Alaska, such as civil engineers.

I see this Alaska gas Pipeline venture being such a huge dream back in your home state, the ups and downs, the disheartening news of sadness just after rejoicing of breaking news of final permit advancement being in the works, a never ending project on paper that never materializes. Too many folks involved with their hands in this cookie jar from high profile representatives, environmental clearances and restrictions, financing, US Government intervention, public opposition and the list goes on and on.

The only thing I could relate to on the Highway Transportation end was a 22 mile expressway project in suburban Phila. called the Cross County Expressway or named the Blue Route to bypass the City of Philadelphia. The plans were developed in the early 1920's, reviewed by the local governments and the administration of the local PA Department of Highways. After 50 years of stalled progress for the reasons above, the man initially responsible for the engineering and planning of the project was interviewed by local media in Philadelphia and said “Halley’s Comet will come by again before this project will be completed".

In 1986, Halley's Comet passed by earth again, the man was right it was still not completed but definitely under construction at that time. On Christmas Eve, 1991, there was a very large gathering of officials at the entrance of the Expressway for a ribbon cutting and the official opening of the highway. It was a most joyful day and tearful one remembering those who contributed the efforts and not see the end. The original planner by that time and day since passed away.

Alaskans I very well can understand where you’re coming from.

Default Civil Engineers in AK

"The oil service companies in Alaska hire 60-80% of their professional positions from outside Alaska, such as civil engineers".

Thank you, I would not be surprised that many of these service companies are located outside of AK such as BP and many others and some of the engineering work may be at the headquarter and not in AK. If you know of any companies in the state that hire please let me know and thank you again.

The comments section of that article seems to put forth the idea that most Alaskans, or at least most Alaskans who read the Anchorage Daily News and comment on it, are in favor of ACES. There are people citing 28 new exploration wells by the end of 2012, plus record development and other stats. What's the reason for the disparity between those people and you? I know people are losing Slope jobs, but the way you were putting it, it sounded like most everyone in the state was against ACES. Now it's sounding different. I just don't know what to believe. All I know is I don't need Alaska's economy to go tanking right now. I haven't even gotten there yet!

The ADN is an urban liberal rag and the comment section quite often reflects that. I especially loved the comment about how the oil companies do nothing for the average working people of Alaska.

I fail to see how any remark I made in this thread indicated that almost everyone in the state is against it, just that a lot of people have lost jobs since big oil took their toys and went to ND to play.

Moose has explained this very well in other posts in other threads.

No, you're right, I misspoke. You haven't insinuated that really, but you have made it quite clear how you feel about ACES. But you're right, my mistake. I can't see how everyone in the state wouldn't be against it if it's costing Alaska its main source of industry and jobs for its citizens. All that and there is still a loyal flock of morons ready to sign off on anything put forth by a democrat because "oil and gas is evil and will destroy the environment". And this is coming from a serious environmentalist!

I feel like people in this country don't vote much on principles and ideals anymore, it's mainly done by party now. It's been that way since I've been old enough to be aware of politics, in fact. And what bothers me most is that I have quite a few card-carrying, straight-party-ticket-voting Republicans in my close extended family. They don't realize the damage they do by not voting based on beliefs.

Honestly, ACES doesn't really affect us much here in SE in any direct fashion. Our particular economy and even much of our culture is more tied to the Seattle area than it is to the rest of the state.

I don't think that ACES is necessarily going to bankrupt the state but I do believe that some changes need to be made in that legislation. We were already getting a fair amount of loot from the oil companies ...anyway there are a lot of varying opinions on this; this link discusses some of what was written in the comment section of the other article.
