A polar bear was shot and killed on Endicott Oil Field in the North Slope.
According to BP spokesperson Steve Rinehart, the company and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services are investigating the shooting. Fish and Wildlife can't comment on an ongoing investigation.
Rinehart said a security guard with Purcell Security, who has the security contract for BP, shot the bear after it continued to approach employee housing.
The guard thought he was shooting the bear with a bean bag round; instead it was inadvertently shot by a cracker round, which imminates loud noises and lights like a firecracker, said Rinehart.
The bear was shot August 3rd and died a few days later, most likely, Rinehart said, on August 15th.
Rinehart said this is the first time a polar bear has been shot and killed on BP's operations in Alaska.
"This outcome was clearly unintended," said Rinehart. "The guard was trying to protect people. He was not trying to hurt the bear. We feel awful about it. I know anyone who's had anything to do with this feels badly about it."

So very sorry to hear about the bear Sity... Polar bears are such majestic animals. How can an experienced guard make such an error?... very dangerous if the animal was trying to stalk the humans that lived in the area though... just very sad situation.

Sounds like the security guard needs to at least be disciplined if he really didn't know what kind of shell he was firing. All the cracker rounds I've seen are bright orange - hard to mistake for anything else.

Also, you might want to include a link to the article you're quoting.

A link to the original article (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44265608/ns/local_news-anchorage_ak/ - broken link) is now here for you to click on!

Yes you would think the person in charge would know what he was doing; but I've found out that when you ask for help, all you get is people that need help!!

This is a perfect example - that jerk should be arrested !!

oh what a shame the bear had to suffer that long before dying from being shot .. .. .. .. ..!

Oh Please... wake up to reality! I think many people in this country are now officially brain dead!! A bear threatens people - gets shot and dies.

How about a brief comment on the MILLIONS of INNOCENT CHILDREN MURDERED through abortion ... in this country ???

All because of some 'outdated' obselte manuscript that says "thou shalt not kill! The command to "teach your children" has now been replaced with - murder! and it is accepted without question!!

Oh you sound so pathetic !!! .. the poor bear! My dear you have truly lost any sign of a conscience!!
